Sophie Allison, the 20-year-old songwriter is an on-the-rise Nashville artist that releases music as “Soccer Mommy.” This indie singer writes songs to soundtrack self-discovery. She was enrolled at New York University but she has stated, “now I don’t wanna go back to school at all.” She has taken a year off to make music. I think this is a good idea since she has gained some decent popularity over the past year, with her videos averaging about 50k views. Her vocals have a melancholy feel with a hint of depression that perfectly encapsulates the feeling of being heartbroken, but also dissociated from the experience.
I really enjoy the visual contrast of the band and her single shot in this music video for her song, “Inside Out”:
Her look is very minimalistic. She has brown hair that lays flat on her head, with a tomboyish style. She has a laid-back vibe that mixes perfectly with her music. I would compare her style to Japanese Breakfast.
Listen to the similar style here:
She has said that she gets her inspiration from Avril Lavinge and puts her own spin on it. Her music definitely captures an angsty vibe but is softer, rather than Lavinge’s powerful vocals. She is definitely an up and coming indie artist and will probably gain a lot of popularity this year, especially since she has a great stage name. Indie music needs some new faces, and she is the perfect one to step up to the plate.
