Snapchat has made an ass of itself in the past month. Not only did they create a ridiculous update that made them lose $1.3 billion of the company’s market value, they have been messing with the wrong people.

Snapchat put out an ad for the mobile game “Would You Rather?” and it was anything but funny. Snapchat displayed this image to its users and it got serious attention. It presented users with two options: “Slap Rihanna” or “Punch Chris Brown.” To give some background Rihanna was a victim of domestic abuse back in 2009 when they were dating and it left Rihanna badly bruised and scarred for life. Brown pleaded guilty in 2009 to beating Rihanna during an argument.

Check out the highly offensive ad here:

Rihanna put out a statement on her Instagram story that said:

“Now SNAPCHAT I know you already know you ain’t my fav app out there! But I’m just trying to figure out what the point was with this mess!” I’d love to call it ignorance but I know you ain’t that dumb. You spent money to animate something that would intentionally bring shame to DV victims and made a joke of it.”

Snapchat played the victim by saying:

“This advertisement is disgusting and never should have appeared on our service. We are so sorry we made the terrible mistake of allowing it through our review process. We are investigating how that happened so that we can make sure it never happens again.”

After this incident, Snapchat lost an additional $800 million dollars. They deserve it.

The creators of Snapchat are acting like a victim but they are doing everything in their power to deserve the backlash they are getting. How could you possibly turn something as serious as domestic violence into a joke? That is just horrible and distasteful. It wasn’t funny at all and makes fun of victims of this horrible crime. Rihanna is a strong person for coming out of this situation alive and probably feels horrible that Chris Brown somehow still has a career. On top of this Snapchat put out the worst update in the history of updates to confuse users across all platforms. This company is giving me a headache and I am thinking of deleting the app. You can’t just make fun of domestic violence and expect your company not to lose millions of dollars. Like Rihanna said, “shame on you.”
