Students are taking it into their own hands now to stand up to the system. Due to the recent school shooting in Parkland, Florida, which took the lives of 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, students walked out of their classrooms for 17 minutes to protest to honor those lives.

There have been around 30 mass shootings in 2018 and it is only March. It seems like, after another headline, there is a new one waiting to make the news. It has gotten legitimately ridiculous to turn a blind eye against what is happening in the United States, but no gun control laws have been passed at the federal level. It has gotten to the point where we need to start having protests to make it clear to the government that we will not stand for this type of neglect.

On March 14th, 2018 students finally had enough of being silenced. There were 3130 walkouts are scheduled across the country and students all stood their ground. A lot of schools allowed their students to peacefully protest, and some teachers even walked out with them.

But some schools threatened suspension or other punishments, for what? All these students are doing is protesting their right not to get shot in school. School has become the breeding ground for hate and if one doesn’t think it can happen to them, they are mistaken. Shootings are getting way too common for us to make that statement anymore.

The students that organized the March For Our Lives put out a statement that read,

“To the parents supporting their children walking out, thank you for raising this new generation of leaders. To the parents who didn’t support their children who walked out anyway, thank you for raising this new generation of leaders.”

Here are some pictures of the students who participated in the walk-out:

I hope that gun laws can change soon so kids can go to school for an education and not be distracted by literally being shot. The government needs to humble itself down and realize that these gun laws are doing more harm than good. Even though it is a right, it is just too big of a threat. Hopefully there will be more walkouts that I can participate in. We have to fight for what is right and hopefully we can see change this year before it’s too late.
