The final season of Game of Thrones has certainly been far the shakiest, agreed upon by both the critics and masses. Not only are the ratings very low, but I’d bet that if you are a Game of Thrones fan, there is a big chance that either you or someone you know disliked the final season. For example, the Rotten Tomatoes ratings reflect this, as critical ratings started to plunge after the second episode. Episode 3, “The Long Night”, got a 75% rating which was actually one of the lowest of the entire series up to that point. It then got progressively worse with 58%, 47%, and 56% for the final three episodes. Sure the writers aren’t aided by George R.R. Martin’s source material, and sure the writers are allowed to slip up and maybe even have a few bad episodes, but the blunder is unacceptable when the episodes are the most important of the entire series.
For these reasons, after Episode 4: “The Last of the Stark”, there was made an online petition on Change.org to remake the entire final season with “competent writers” and it has garnered over a million signatures so far. The petition officially reads: ““David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have proven themselves to be woefully incompetent writers when they have no source material (i.e. the books) to fall back on. This series deserves a final season that makes sense.” Though it is unlikely that HBO will spend tens of millions of dollars to remake the six episodes, this petition is at least a testament to the overall negative reception of the final season.
