[RANT] VOICEMAILS ON TRACKS

On the radio, today voicemails in songs are becoming a huge trend. They were a semi-decent trend in music back in the 2000s but they would mostly appear in music videos. Today in the rap industry almost every album has a voicemail recording as an interlude into the next song or at the beginning of the album. It gives character to the album and gives you an insight of the artist’s life. Some of the voicemails are left by members of the person’s family, most likely their mother.

Just check out some songs with voicemails:

It has gotten to the point where you should no longer call artists because you might end up on one of their tracks. People seem to like this style but I am not a huge fan of it. If you do something over and over again it is going to get tired, and tired I certainly am. It was cool at first to give fans a look into your personal life but it has started to become the part of the song where you fast forward as soon as possible. They are not interesting to listen to and bring almost nothing to the whole concept of the album. Yeah, It’s cool to hear your favorite rapper’s parents telling them to eat dinner but I could really care less. I am here to listen to your music and not the personal message that Snoop Dog left for you. It’s kind of just shoving your fame in people’s faces at that point. Also, it is pretty arrogant to assume that every listener wants to hear them talk to their friend or family member. Guess what- we don’t.

I want this trend to retire in music because it just isn’t that great. It adds nothing to the song, and even makes it longer and not as enjoyable. I don’t know how people are still putting this in their songs because it waters it down. Can artists wake up and realize we are here for the music?

[AN ACTUALLY GOOD RADIO TRACK] “FRIENDS”

There is a new song that is appearing all over the radio right now and it’s blowing up. The song is entitled, “FRIENDS” by Marshmello and Anne-Marie. The song is described to be the friend zone anthem. Being friend zoned can be described as when you want to take your relationship with your friend to the next level but the other person doesn’t want to. This typically creates a very messy situation in which the people can no longer be friends, or someone is caught constantly trying to chase someone who is not interested. That whole situation can be pretty annoying especially when you have told the person that you are not interested and they keep pursuing it. The song capitalizes on all those feelings and it is certainly an anthem.

Check out the song here:

Not only is the song really good but the animations for the lyric video are great. It gives a great look at the inside of the song’s story.

They also have a music video that has about 60 million views as of right now:

The lyrics of the chorus go:

[Chorus: Anne-Marie]
Haven’t I made it obvious?
Haven’t I made it clear?
Want me to spell it out for you?
F-R-I-E-N-D-S
Haven’t I made it obvious?
Haven’t I made it clear?
Want me to spell it out for you?
F-R-I-E-N-D-S
F-R-I-E-N-D-S

I actually thought when she was singing “F-R-I-E-N-D-S” that she was just mouthing random words so I thought this was pretty hilarious.

Overall this is a great radio song that I actually like. It might have the typical cliches but I think it’s a great look at how annoying your “friends” can be when you have clearly stated you weren’t interested in them. The song has a certain swag about it to make you instantly dance like Rihanna. I even dance in my car to this song. The beat behind the song in the chorus is really infectious. I guess you can call this my guilty pleasure.

[NEW ARTIST] HOBO JOHNSON

Hobo Johnson is a fairly popular artist right now that is taking a different direction in rap. He is from Sacramento and he has made a name for himself as a local artist. He really got big after his video entry to NPR’s 2018 Tiny Desk Contest appeared on Facebook. It currently has 3 million views on Facebook in less than a week. His other videos average around 500,000 views.

You can view it here:

This is how I found out about him and I think he’s really great. He turns rap into poetry to make a hybrid of the two works. He even has a punk sound due to the topics in his songs. The song’s theme is being in love with a girl who has a boyfriend, which has all happened to us at some point. He is not afraid to show his emotions and he has such a way with words to make you feel his pain even behind the screen.

I am so happy that he got his name out through the Facebook platform and I hope we can see this unconventional artist make it big in the next few months. We need someone like Hobo Johnson to spice things up.

[BEST MEMES] WALK IT TALK IT

The Migos released a new video for their song, “Walk It Talk It” featuring Drake on March 18th and it is one of the best music videos of the year.

If you haven’t watched it yet I suggest you should here:

This highly creative video is set up in the 70s with a dance visual that takes you back in time. It’s funny to see these rappers dressing up in wigs and bell bottom suits but the funniest part of the music video is seeing Drake with long hair.

This is the hair I’m talking about:

Drake is pictured wearing a curly, wet wig which is a perfect opportunity to make fun of him. The music video was silly in itself but the internet really used that to their advantage. They coined him as a typical drink Dominican uncle at a party, oh god.

Here are the best memes to come out of the “Walk It Talk It” video:

Hey, at least they’re not making fun of his dance moves anymore!

AZEALIA BANKS FINALLY DROPS HER MUSIC VIDEO FOR “SODA”

Azealia Banks, a name we don’t hear from a lot, just dropped a video for a song she put out four years ago. She is a rapper and singer from Harlem who got big from her single in 2011, “212” featuring Lazy Jay. Since her big blow up she has ruined her name by getting into pointless fights, which takes away from her talent as a rapper. Even though a lot of people don’t necessarily support her anymore she will have a place in my heart.

She just released her video for “SODA” a track that was on her 2014 release Broke With Expensive Taste. I hope the five-year wait was worth it!

Check out the video here:

Banks has always been great at giving amazing visuals for her songs. She is shown in a beautiful yellow dress walking through the desert with a black strip around her eyes to show that she can see but she still has a mask on. The best part of this song happens at the end of the song during the chorus variation as she sings,

I’m trying to hide behind tired eyes, I sigh
I’m tired of trying to try not to cry and
I say soda soda, I’m a high rolla- yo sir
I pose for the poster- Yep!
Icy Cola Coke-a, Sprite I love the most-a!
I ride rollercoasters, I try all the cultures
A smile, a guise
Nighttime is mine, and my eyes are wide at night

She plans to be releasing her Fantasea 2 project, which is reportedly coming in early summer.
