Just like how behind every great man is a great woman, behind every great musician there is a great businessman. In short, that’s what I gathered from the new Netflix documentary about Clarence Avant called The Black Godfather. The film is produced by his daughter, Nicole Avant, and makes the viewer feel guilty for not knowing about Clarence sooner. After all, without him, there would have been no Bill Withers, no “Lean on Me”.
Netflix released an informative press release that outlines the movie:
“The Black Godfather charts the exceptional and unlikely rise of Avant, a music executive whose trailblazing behind-the-scenes accomplishments impacted the legacies of icons such as as Bill Withers, Quincy Jones, Muhammad Ali, Hank Aaron, and Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama.
Driven by a sense of equality, loyalty, and justice, Avant left the Jim Crow south behind to emerge as a powerhouse negotiator at a time when deep-seated racism penetrated every corner of America. Avant defied notions of what a black executive could do, redefining the industry for entertainers and executives of color, and leaving a legacy of altruism for others to emulate.
Directed by Academy Award nominee Reginald Hudlin and featuring interviews with Snoop Dogg, P. Diddy, Lionel Richie, Suzanne de Passe, David Geffen, Jerry Moss, Cicely Tyson, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, and Jamie Foxx, among others, The Black Godfather pulls the curtain back on the maestro himself, projecting a spotlight on the man who’s spent his entire career ensuring that it shined on others.”
Avant was a skilled negotiator, whose constant pursuit of a favorable bottom line allowed many black musicians to receive deals as fair as the ones their white counterparts accepted. Although the mindset that “it’s all about the numbers” benefited Avantin negotiations, the director Reginald Hudlin made sure to highlight the human side of him, the one that frequently held charity events or made deals for free.
Great movie, highly recommend for any music fans looking to learn about one of a behind-the-scenes legend.

Surprisingly and yet also unsurprisingly, a San Francisco based radio station has banned Drake music from its playlists for the duration of the NBA Finals. The station is called KBLX and this news comes to us view The Mercury Review.
For anybody who somehow didn’t know. Drake is a Toronto Raptors super-fan and has been quite dramatic with his courtside support of the Raptors against the feared Golden State Warriors.
Elroy Smith, KBLX operations and programs director, spoke about the ban: “(We) could not stand on the sidelines and accept Drake showing no love for our Golden State Warriors. It is my joy to cease and desist all of Drake’s music on KBLX in support a team that is loved by the Bay Area and around the world. Oh yes, we are proclaiming a 3-peat.”
Though he is likely right implying that Drake’s fervent support for The Raptors may be taking a toll on The Warriors and their fanbase, Smith’s later statement that the ban was because of Drake “showing no love for our Golden State Warriors”, is not entirely true. Drake has both Steph Curry and Kevin Durant tattoos on his arm. Drake’s later statement that “all is fair in war and war” (a reference to “all is fair in love and war”) is actually quite descriptive.

Winston Duke (Us, Black Panther) and Zazie Beetz (Atlanta, Joker) are set to star in sci-fi thriller “Nine Days”.
The indie film has an interesting, philosophical premise which I am intrigued to see. It is set in an alternate, future reality inside a man’s home. The man interviews a group of individuals, personifications of human souls, to decide which should be born as a human.
Writer and director of the movie, Edson Oda said in a statement, “”I’m thrilled to be working with such an incredible cast and amazing team. So grateful for all the support I have received. Nine Days is a very personal story to me, and I can’t imagine a better team to help me tell it.” This is Oda’s first time directing and writing a movie and I’ve got to say, he’s not off to a bad start.
“This is one of the most beautiful and complex human stories we’ve been fortunate enough to be a part of, so eloquently spanning across cultures and vantage points, yet set in a world that we’ve never experienced before,” Producers Berman, Kongsved, and Tunstall said in a joint statement. “Being able to partake in creating something so wholly original, and facilitating the realization of Edson’s singular vision with the help of this outrageously talented cast and crew, is truly exciting.”
According to Complex, filming for the movie will begin this summer but there is yet to a set release date.

It’s good to see Offset putting his foot down on the issues that matter. During one of Cardi B’s recent livestreams, he was seen playing Fortnite and offered a scathing critique of the massively popular game: “That shit for kids, that shit wack. I like Call of Duty, get your ass in the field, real game. If you gon’ die, you gon die. All that building up, it ain’t real life.”
To be fair, the whole respawning part of Call of Duty is not real life and Fortnite’s one death rule is way more realistic. But I’m not sure that was what Offset was going for. You see, it’s not about how many times you die that makes it like real life, it’s the fact that walls magically appearing in front of someone is not realistic. In that sense, Offset is quite discerning.
Cardi B offered her point of view as well saying, “Yeah because I be seeing the kids talk about the game, but I don’t really know. My favorite game is really Mortal Kombat.” You’re wrong Cardi, that game sucks.

According to Complex and Twitter, ASAP Rocky likes the idea of going on a world tour with Kid Cudi.
A twitter user tweeted at Kid Cudi, “would we see you do a world tour in the coming years.. revisiting places like Australia?” Cudi responded that he’d like to and why not bring some people like ASAP Rocky.
Rocky responded to the mention enthusiastically, “FACT$!!! THIS IS A GOAL LET$ MAKE IT HAPPEN!!”
Rocky and Cudi have collaborated on tracks on Cudi’s 2013 album Indicud and Rock’s 2018 album TESTING, but they’ve never toured together. Thanks to @GYacoub95 for seemingly planting the idea in Cudi and of course shout-out to Twitter as a medium, for possibly bringing these two all star rappers together.
