I am sure you all experienced the utter surprise and confusion yesterday afternoon when your phone, along with millions of other, buzzed with a message from Americas very own President, Donald Trump.
The message that surfaced on the phone screen of many yesterday stated “THIS IS A TEST of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System. No action is needed”. This small message apparently authorized by Donald Trump will be the first of many to alert Americans of national emergencies and catastrophe’s that may potentially occur. What makes these alerts unique from the alerts we are now used to getting like amber warnings and flood warning messages is that these “presidential alerts” are not able to be turned off, there is no opting out of this one. This mere fact alone has many fuming, and according to The New York Times, has prompted a lawsuit which has been filed in New York. The NYT states that three New York residents say the alerts violate their free speech.
What many don’t know is that the Communication Act of 1934 makes this completely legal and gives the president power to use communication systems in the case of an emergency.
Americans took to twitter heavily to express their comments, opinions, questions, and concerns about the Nationwide text message. See some of the tweets below that sparked the internet as well as brought humor to the very serious concerns of many Americans.
I, like many, am not really a fan of the text messages from the president, but was also lucky enough to not have received one. Comment down below what you think of the President being able to distribute out mass text messages.
That’s right, there is a possibility of Americas number one toy story making a come back after news of the canceled long awaited bankruptcy auction.
According to a report from The Wall Street Journal, owners are going to attempt to resurrect the store instead of selling its brand in order to pay back creditors. The company spent the last year closing over 100 stores, so this is very surprising to hear of the cancellation. Hedge funds have decided that reorganizing the toy store, that has been around for 61 years, will have a better result financially than the selling off the brand.
The Wall Street Journal states that the closing of the store created an $11 billion hole in the toy industry, leaving around 33,000 people without a job. The individuals who work for the company are said to be receiving a severance pay, according to The Washington Post. They also stated that they are owed 75 million dollars in severance pay.
The investors plan to work with new partners in order to gain new ideas for stores in the U.S. and other countries. This is shockingly surprising in a good way for many individuals as Toys R Us has become a symbol of childhood for many generations. The hearing of the closing tugged on the heartstrings of many adults as they soon realized they would not be able to share the store that they loved at such a young age with their children. The news of the possible comeback has placed a smile on the faces of many, and will hopefully have a better run this time around. Unfortunately the store will most likely not be back up and running before the holiday, but we will surely see plans very soon.

Thursday morning began the Senate Judiciary Committee’s hearing of Brett Kavanaugh’s first accusor, Dr. Christine Blasey Ford. Dr. Ford recounted in graphic detail how when she was 15, a then 17-year-old Kavanaugh attempted to sexually assault her at a party. This hearing is coming in preparation of the Senate’s vote to confirm Kavanaugh into the Supreme Court.
Time’s Up and #MeToo advocate Alyssa Milano was in attendance during today’s hearings. She was a guest od Senator Dianne Feinstein. However, multiple celebrities have taken to social media to express not only their belief in Dr. Ford’s account, but to thank her for her bravery in coming forward.
I’m in awe of Dr. Ford’s bravery. This Kavanaugh response is insultingly bad. I hope this is the last time this unqualified & immoral man has our country’s attention. We have enough of those men to deal with right now, none of whom deserve to be hired FOR LIFE. Least of all him.
Out of the blue, a hero steps up and I’m in awe. I know the pain of these kinds of memories, Dr. Ford. Memories that are indelibly imprinted on your brain no matter how many years go by. I, like millions of women across America, are behind you and thank you profoundly.
Today's hearing reminds us that to really tell a woman's story, one must begin with a 15-minute preamble from an elderly man about why her story is suspicious. #KavanaughHearings
Following the testimony by both Kavanaugh and Dr. Ford, the Senate Judiciary will vote on Friday as to whether or not Kavanaugh will be appointed into the United States Supreme Court.

New York is taking a huge step toward erasing the stigma associated with mental health.
The home of the city that never sleeps has officially become the first state to include mandatory mental health classes in the curriculum for grades k-12. The law that enforces this new rule came into action on July 1st and strives for “making health a standard part of the education system”.
Though teachers will have leeway as to how they would like to organize the classes and lessons, The New York State Mental Health Education Advisory Council, established in August 2017, has provided some guidelines as to how the classes should be conducted. These guidelines include nine key points of focus that the classes will need to follow. Some of these focuses will include identifying signs of mental health problems, resources for help and support, and the negative stigma that surrounds mental health.
Unfortunately mental health is a rising epidemic that affects more individuals than expected. According to the Anxiety and Depression Association the number of teens and adults who suffer from mental health problems has reached an astounding number. The association shows that 40 million adults in the U.S. (ages 18 and older) suffer from anxiety disorders every year. For children, though this number is not higher, it is still very surprising. According to the National Alliance of Mental Health, studies show that 13 % ages 8-15 and 21% of teens ages 13-18 experience severe mental disorders.
The commissioner of education in the state, Maryellen Elia, told NBC News Better tat decreasing the stigma tat surrounds this epidemic is one of the main reasons New York has passed the bill. Virginia has also recently passed a law tat requires ninth and tenth graders to be taught mental health lessons as well.
I believe this is the right step toward changing the mental health stigma in our country. Not only will this teach young kids how to identify when they are not okay it will also show them getting help is okay. Hopefully this will become more of norm and many states will be on their way to making the same additions in their curriculum.
