ON THIS DAY : 90’s NIRVANA

Back on April 2, 1990 Nirvana hit up Smart Studios in Madison, Wisconsin and worked on demo versions to their hit songs “In Bloom“, “Dive“, “Lithium“, “Pay To Play“, “Imodium“, “Sappy“, and “Polly” with production by Butch Vig.

YOU DON’T HAVE TO LISTEN TO RAPISTS

In rap today, a lot of musicians are facing criminal charges and allegations of sexual misconduct. The worst part? No one cares. These artists are still releasing music and gaining a following.

Recently Tekashi 6ix9ine came on the scene with his hit, “Gummo.” Not only was it an average song, the guy looks straight up creepy.

Um, why does he have “69” tattooed on his face?

He was accused of sexual misconduct with a minor. Rapper ZillaKammi posted photos of him grabbing the breasts of a woman who is 13. Genius has confirmed that Hernandez (Tekashi 6ix9ine) pled guilty to the charges. He even referred to himself as a “happy rapist” in a Snapchat video?

Similar rapper XXXTENTACION scored a number two hit on the Billboard top 200 while facing charges for allegedly assaulting his pregnant girlfriend.

Rapper Kodak Black is also facing sexual assault charges. None of the cases have been resolved but the fact that almost no one is even phased by it says a lot about society. When the sexual assault allegations in Hollywood happened the actors got blacklisted, but the same isn’t happening in the music industry. So many people are turning a blind eye to this and are openly not caring about victims of sexual assault. Atlantic Records has no plan to drop Kodak Black and XXX signed a multi-million dollar deal with Capitol Records.

So what does this say about the music industry? People are willing to still work with people who are accused of sexual misconduct and it’s truly disgusting. These rappers aren’t even that good and there are so many other people you can listen to. Nobody cares anymore about basic human decency. It seems like we are living in a different dimension where people are okay with rape. Have we turned into mindless zombies listening to whatever sounds halfway decent? Overall, you don’t have to listen to rapists- what’s wrong with you people?

[EIGHTH GRADE] BO BURNHAM’S FIRST FEATURE FILM

Bo Burnham, the 27-year-old comedian that has been known for his social media presence and comedy acts has a new project up his sleeve. Everyone thought he was laying low, but he was secretly working on his next big project.

Check out some of his popular Vines:

He is releasing his first feature film this summer entitled Eighth Grade and it is set to be released sometime this year. It premiered on the Sundance festival on January 19th and has gotten great reviews.

Check out the trailer here:

The Sundance press release stated:

“Thirteen-year-old Kayla endures the tidal wave of contemporary suburban adolescence as she makes her way through the last week of middle school — the end of her thus far disastrous eighth-grade year — before she begins high school.”

The story centers around an awkward girl in the eighth grade who is trying to fit in with the other people at school but her social anxiety doesn’t allow her to branch out. To cope she uses the internet to vent and post videos, but it all comes at a price. The theme of this movie relates to anyone who hated middle school- and who didn’t? It might be a basic concept but Bo Burnham does have a talent for comedy, and we will certainly be seeing his dry comedy up on the big screen- let’s hope it doesn’t tank like his MTV show Zach Stone is Gonna Be Famous (despite how good it really was).

The film is set to be released in July:

GORILLAZ IS PUTTING OUT A NEW ALBUM?

Gorillaz is a band that has always waited a lot of time in between albums to release their music. After their 2010 release, Plastic Beach they waited seven years to release their experimental record, Humanz. So that is why it is so shocking that they working on an album that is set to release sometime this year.

Damon Albarn, the lead singer of the virtual band told a crowd in Chile,

“If you go and tell anyone that we’re putting a new album out very soon, then I’ll deny it because I didn’t say that, alright?”

Then they PERFORMED a new track, “Hollywood” which features the one and only Snoop Dogg. The band has a history of working with rappers on their songs. They also experiment with their genre and can be categorized as art pop, hip-hop or electronica at times.

Watch the performance of their new song, “Hollywood” here:

Jamie Hewlett stated,

“We’re going straight into the album with no break. Usually we have a good five-year break between each album but we decided: ‘You know what? Let’s keep going’ because there’s ideas for a few more albums so we’re going to go straight into that. That’s will be all of next year and probably the year beyond that.”

They even teased their new song, “Idaho” back in October which is also going to be a part of their new release.

I am so excited that the Gorillaz will be releasing new music this year. Of course, only a year-long wait is better than almost a decade. I thought they might wait since Humanz was a groundbreaking album that worked so well and tastefully strayed away from their classic sound while still maintaining their roots. I actually got an opportunity to see them perform last year at The Meadows Festival and it was one of the best days of my life. The visual effects that they perform with are out of this world. The stage light shines blue on the lead singer as graphics on the stage display the characters of the band. Everything they do, they do it with taste and I can’t wait for them to have another album to add to their vast discography. Overall, “Hollywood” and “Idaho” seem really promising and I’m glad they are fighting against their writer’s block. I’m ready for yet another summer of the Gorillaz dominating the scene.

MILEY CYRUS’ EASTER PHOTOSHOOT

Love or hate Miley Cyrus- you have to agree that she is gorgeous. About twenty minutes ago she just released her Easter themed photoshoot for the huge day this Sunday and it’s the most adorable thing I’ve ever seen. She is literally all of our wives.

Check out the pictures here:

This has to be the best one

Of course, there had to be a playful one- it is, in fact, Miley Cyrus.

I love the pin-up style and pink themed photo shoot. I don’t know what it has to do with her music- because I didn’t even know she was religious but it’s always great to see Miley Cyrus on every social media platform available. I’m definitely going to save one of these for my wallpaper.

“Hoppy” Easter everybody!

[NEW RELEASE “BE CAREFUL”] CARDI B IS ACTING DIFFERENT

Cardi B just released her latest single from her debut album, Invasion of Privacy, which is set to drop next Friday, April 6. The song is entitled, “Be Careful.”

Listen to the song here:

The first thing I noticed about this song was the cover art. Cardi is shown wearing a completely pink outfit combined with pink fishnets, and a really stylish purple wig. The major issue I have with this, is that it is a rip off from Nicki Minaj. It is actually really obvious that she is copying Nicki Minaj’s Pink Friday. I understand that it is just a color, but you can’t dismiss the cultural significance of Nicki Minaj’s first album that defined her as one of the biggest names in rap. Also after Punk Friday, she released Pink Friday… Roman Reloaded in 2011. Then in 2014, she released The Pinkprint. Pink has been Nicki Minaj’s image for her entire career. Lil Kim even accused Nicki of copying her style. So is this the trend of female rappers? Everyone just copying off of everyone’s success. Cardi could have had a different cover so I don’t know why she would choose to do something that doesn’t set her apart from the crowd.

Next is the song, even though I do like the track it just doesn’t have the star quality that “Bodack Yellow” has. I can imagine this track being on the album but I wouldn’t suspect it to be the main single to tease the album. I also thought “Bartier Cardi” had so much more star power. She should have released the music video before dropping the single.

The feedback has certainly been mixed. Some people think the track has a raw sound that is unlike anything in the industry right now. The track is certainly real. But other people say that they think it is absolute trash and that her singing is horrible. I do agree that she probably should have put someone else on the chorus because singing doesn’t seem to be her strong suit. I expect there to be a remix.

Regardless Cardi is standing behind the track:

I guess we will all make our final judgements on April 6th.
