[MY TOP PICKS] THE BEST LOVE SONGS

It’s Valentine’s Day which means everyone is either buying last second chocolates and love cards or they are getting drunk at a bar. Whatever your situation is, everyone knows how much singers love to write about love. Love is an emotion that is all encompassing and is one of the most powerful feelings that humans can experience. All this passion can drive artists to make incredible songs about love and love lost.

Here is some of my favorite tracks about love and heart break:

[KANYE WEST] RUNAWAY IS STILL GETTING REMIXED

During the Superbowl, there were some worthy commercials that caught our eye. One of them included a new trailer for Season 2 of HBO’s Westworld.

Even though I have no idea what Westworld is, I did notice something about the background music. My ears shot up and were sent back to 2010 to Kanye West’s release of “Runaway.” Not only was this song one of his most emotional releases, it was also phenomenally produced.

Runaway makes you feel a longing for yesterday which produces intense emotions of disconnected sadness. It is a tribute to all the “assholes” who only have a hard exterior to cover up the insecurities they have within them. Taking that concept and putting it into a song perfectly showed Kanye’s talent as an artist. So much so that it is still getting remixed eight years later.

The version in the Westworld trailer was created by the show’s composer Ramin Djawadi as the request of co-creator Jonathan Nolan.

Djawadi stated,

“I had a lot of fun working on reimagining the song. It is always tricky to reduce a song with multiple layers in to a single instrument, I’m a fan of Kayne’s music. It would be fun to cover ‘Can’t Tell Me Nothing.'”

He really made the song much more stripped down. It sounds like a true classical piece. Overall this cover reminded me of one of the best song’s Kanye has ever put out and I will always love hearing news like this.

SAVE YOUR MONEY: OUTING THE WORST LIVE PERFORMERS

Performing live is an essential part of the music industry. Live music creates energy in the audience that can’t be felt on a recording of the song. Seeing your favorite artist perform live can be the best of your life or the worst. As concert tickets get more and more expensive, we have to be wise with our money. Some artists perform better in the studio than on the stage. I know that it is heartbreaking to find out that your favorite artists use such an extreme amount of vocal modification that they can’t recreate it on stage, but finding out before you spend all your money will help you.

Here is a list of the worst performers to see live:

Mariah Carey

Mariah Carey emerged on the music scene in 1990 and she blew the world away with her vocal talent. She has a 5-octave vocal range that has been praised throughout the decades. Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end, and as time went on so did her voice. Now she gives shaky performances with lip syncs and I’m sure everyone remembers her 2017 New Year’s performance:

Maroon 5’s Adam Levine

Adam Levine has never been a person to shy away from a paycheck. In 2002 Maroon 5 got their start and obtained a few Grammy awards in the process. Although they are complete superstars, they actually aren’t the best vocally. Adam’s voice has no range and stays the same on almost every track. You don’t have to see him live to realize what he is all about.

Jennifer Lopez

It’s definitely known that Jennifer Lopez is not the best singer. She can thank her success off of her few hits and her looks. A lot of people in the industry are not happy about her level of success when it seems like she doesn’t have a lot of back up, besides her butt.

Lana Del Rey

I love Lana Del Rey’s music but I will never buy a ticket to see her live. Her eerie vocals can really only be felt through a track. When she is performing live her whole persona falls apart. Lana tries to cover up her pitchy and shaky vocals by putting in a lot of production on her songs but her lack of talent is apparent when she’s forced to perform live.

And no, she can’t delete her SNL performance

Katy Perry

Could Katy Perry ever really sing? It is shocking that she has even gotten to this level of stardom with her voice. Her record company promoted the fact that she was sexy before her vocal talent, which she doesn’t have.

Britney Spears

Of course, Britney Spears is on the list. This girl can barely sing a note. All of her songs are highly auto-tuned with no vocal range. She really doesn’t step out of her comfort zone and basically, all her live performances are lip synced. Britney’s career was defined by her girl next door char, her dance moves and catchy lyrics. Singing was almost the second thing on her mind.

Selena Gomez

Nothing makes me angrier than Selena Gomez. This girl’s fame is truly based on her being semi-pretty. She was the star of a Disney Channel show, “The Wizards of Waverly Place” and it was a crap show with horrible acting. I never understood why they would hire such a bad actress and when she tried to get into singing I laughed at the fact that she even thought she could do it. But here in 2018, Selena Gomez is on the Hot Billboard 100 chart. She can’t sing at all and every track is autotuned. If people could just actually think about the music before they decided to buy it, maybe she wouldn’t have had this level of popularity. But since everyone seems to have lost their brain, artists like this can become insanely popular.

Just look at this video:

Selena Gomez has got me believing in miracles. Maybe I can get rich by being a pretty girl!

It’s definitely odd that famous singers can’t actually sing but I guess that’s just the music business that we live in. Or the artists might have gotten old and their vocal cords aren’t what they used to be. The studio might be able to cover up what they actually sound like, but the performance will tell you the whole truth. Save a couple bucks and continue to listen to the autotuned track. Living in a delusion is better than facing reality.

[DRAKE] GOD’S PLAN ISN’T THAT GOOD

Drake just dropped his latest single, “God’s Plan” on January 19th, 2018 and it’s getting a lot of attention. The Official Charts Company records streams of 7.1 million for this track, in the chart week ending Thursday (Feb. 8) at midnight.

Listen to it here:

The song is playing at almost every party there is and it’s taking over the radio. A new Drake song is here, which means it’s going to stay for a long time. This track is extremely popular, but why? Drake’s track “God’s Plan” sounds like every song he has ever put out. The only lyric that is notable in this song is, “She say, “Do you love me?” I tell her, “Only partly”, I only love my bed and my momma, I’m sorry.”

This lyric is fun to sing, but it shouldn’t be the only good one on the track. Besides that, it feels like I’m listening to his song, “Hotline Bling” and a combination of  the “Best I Ever Had.” He loves to throw relatable lyrics in his songs like in the “Best I Ever Had”,”Sweatpants, hair tied, chillin’ with no make-up on, That’s when you’re the prettiest, I hope that you don’t take it wrong.”

Drake is known for writing heartbreak songs but just recently he seems to be getting over it. The attitude he brings to “Hotline Bling” shows his growth as a person and an artist. His release in 2017 More Life was a groundbreaking title that showed his fans that he no longer suffered from depression. It is a start of a new era, but what does “God’s Plan” bring to the table? Absolutely nothing.

Yes, it is a good song, but that is just because it’s a recycled version of all his songs that have worked. I see no originality in this song and it shows that Drake is starting to become repetitive.

Sources say that they have also felt bit different about a new Drake release.

Lawrence Burney, a writer for Noisey states,

Part of being even a casual Drake fan is to accept the fact that a lot of the music you’re gonna hear from him will sound very similar. There’s nothing wrong with this on the surface. Any Migos project runs the risk of having songs blend into each other so seamlessly that you forget they are separate tracks. But when it comes to Drake, it’s a bit more frustrating and uninspiring because he’s shown his depth on so many occasions that when he half-asses things, it’s much easier to detect. Scary Hours feels like Drake thinks he needs to be a part of the conversation right now. But he doesn’t. At all. That was actually one of the more exciting things about More Life— that he promised to take a break. To go live life and return to us once he’d stored up enough thoughts and emotions that he couldn’t hold in anymore. Like you said Eric, these feel hollow as hell. “God’s Plan” is a bop because the energetic Drake who talks about being destined for greatness has a certain level of spirit and gumption to it.

Drake has to release a new sound or people will get tired of him. This song might be the beginning of the end. We want someone who is going to evolve, not take the same path over and over again. More Life showed signs of change, but this seems more like a change-up.

DON’T HAVE AN AUX CORD? HERE ARE SOME ALTERNATIVES

If you have an old beat up car like mine, and you don’t have an aux cord- drives can become boring or you will spend all your money on CDs. If you don’t have an Aux cord outlet here are ways you can get your music to play in your car:

If you have a cassette player you can buy a tape that comes with an aux cord. It is called a car audio cassette tape adapter transmitter. Make sure that it is able to connect with your phone because some only work on iPhones and iPods. These are sold on Amazon and Target. Here’s what it looks like:

If your car doesn’t have a cassette player, we’re going to have to get another adaptor to play your music. You can buy an FM Transmitter to get your music in your car. It connects to the outlet in your car and it broadcasts a signal from a portable audio device (such as an MP3 player) to a standard FM radio. You put the station on that it shows you and you can play your music in your car. It can be fuzzy sometimes but it beats the alternative of not having your music on when you are driving. These are sold on Amazon, Target, Walmart and places like Best Buy and Radioshack. Here’s what they look like:

I hope this helped you get closer to a better commute. I know I am happy that I no longer have to spend my money on CDs. Why buy a new car when you can just buy one of these?
