THE 2018 PANORAMA MUSIC FESTIVAL LINEUP

The 2018 Panorama NYC music festival happens July 27-29 on Randall’s Island, and the lineup has just been announced! Presented by Goldenvoice, they have an incredible lineup this year with the best rappers in 2017 and 2018. This is a new festival since it was started in the summer of 2016, but it is making a name for itself by including amazing headlines and this might be their best year yet.

The headlines for the Friday, July 27th show are The Weekend, Migos, Father John Misty, The War On Drugs and Dua Lipa, including Jhene Aiko on the smaller stage. The headliners for the Saturday show on July 28th are Janet Jackson, SZA, Cardi B, Gucci Mane and St. Vincent. The other great performers like PVRIS and Japanese Breakfast. On The Sunday show, the headliners are The Killers, The XX (I am actually currently listening to their song right now!), Odesza, David Byrne, Fleet Foxes and other performers include Rex Orange County.

I would predict that the Saturday show will be the best since Janet Jackson has been an icon for a number of years. Also, the fact that Cardi B is going to be performing will draw a lot of people to the Saturday show. Gucci Mane has also been gaining extreme popularity this year, especially with his song, “I Get the Bag” ft. Migos. I also like that there are some alternative/indie bands performing. Having artists like St. Vincent, PVRIS, and Japanese Breakfast will give the show more variety in between all the huge rap acts.

KANYE WEST DEBUTS NEW YEEZY SEASON 6 COLLECTION ON SOCIAL MEDIA

Kanye West’s Yeezy Season 6 collection is poppin’.  He’s used some of social media’s biggest influencers to model his new line on Instagram, and they look dope. If you see of the posts, you’ll notice that Kim Kardashian West‘s previously wore the same outfits before (so lucky to model her man’s clothes). In the past 24 hours, Paris HiltonSami Miro and Jordyn Woods all were seen running errands in Ye’s new collection. I can’t wait to see what else he has in store. What can be better than comfortable and sexy?

[ARTIST TO LOOK OUT FOR] SOCCER MOMMY

Sophie Allison, the 20-year-old songwriter is an on-the-rise Nashville artist that releases music as “Soccer Mommy.” This indie singer writes songs to soundtrack self-discovery. She was enrolled at New York University but she has stated, “now I don’t wanna go back to school at all.” She has taken a year off to make music. I think this is a good idea since she has gained some decent popularity over the past year, with her videos averaging about 50k views. Her vocals have a melancholy feel with a hint of depression that perfectly encapsulates the feeling of being heartbroken, but also dissociated from the experience.

I really enjoy the visual contrast of the band and her single shot in this music video for her song, “Inside Out”:

Her look is very minimalistic. She has brown hair that lays flat on her head, with a tomboyish style. She has a laid-back vibe that mixes perfectly with her music. I would compare her style to Japanese Breakfast.

Listen to the similar style here:

She has said that she gets her inspiration from Avril Lavinge and puts her own spin on it. Her music definitely captures an angsty vibe but is softer, rather than Lavinge’s powerful vocals. She is definitely an up and coming indie artist and will probably gain a lot of popularity this year, especially since she has a great stage name. Indie music needs some new faces, and she is the perfect one to step up to the plate.

[COMING SOON] POST MALONE’S NEXT MASTERPIECE: BEERBONGS & BENTLEYS

Post Malone took 2017 over by storm when he released his first debut album Stoney following his first hit “White Iverson.” This album produced hit songs like “Congratulations” ft. Quavo that hit number two on the Billboard chart and stayed for 52 long weeks. His song “RockStar” ft. 21 Savage, which is the lead single of his second album, also experienced huge success and stayed for about 19 weeks on the chart. Malone has a huge amount of success for his first album, which is making the fans even more excited for his second release. His second album will be entitled, Beerbongs & Bentleys. He stated in an interview that John Mayer, Ty Dolla $ign, Nicki Minaj and Mötley Crüe’s Tommy Lee are going to have guest spots on the offering. I really want to see the song he has planned for John Mayer. I predict that the song will be more like Malone’s track “I Fall Apart” and hopefully we can hear slower songs on this album since Malone is so good at channeling emotion in his songwriting. I would also like to see the song with Nicki Minaj since she is really stepping up her game recently and she always produces a great radio hit.

Post stated in an interview that the project will be released December 1st, 2017, but then took back this statement to continue to work on the album.
He tweeted:

Even though he did not come through on his promise to have it out on December 1st, I am glad that he is taking the time to perfect it. He told Billboard last September that, “there’s a lot of dope stuff going on and it’s almost done. I just have to finalize some things while I’m in LA and hopefully we’ll have it out before the end of the year.” It’s official Post Malone’s new album is coming out this year, so make sure to have your headphones ready, your cigarettes lit and pick up a 24 pack of beer because this is going to be one of the best releases of 2018.

2009: THE DEATH OF THE POP STAR

In music today everything revolves around money. All the artists that are on the radio are not true to themselves and are powered by huge corporations. Even though there are multiple labels promoting artists, these companies are just subsidiaries of major labels. In reality, there are just three major record labels. All the others actually live under their corporate umbrellas. These three major labels are Sony BMG, Universal Music Group, and Warner Music Group. So what does that mean? It means that three huge labels are controlling what gets put out there in the music industry and what gets played on the radio. There is even a formula to create the perfect pop song which is having a repeating chorus played two to four times, including the title sung at least three times, and feature short melodic fragments that repeat a lot to help everyone to remember them. It seems like this is the skeleton that almost every artist is working off of today. Just look at the songs that have been popular recently.

Listen to hear their similarities:

Now that you have heard all of these songs, one will notice the blatant copying of the same structure. The worst part is that no one questions it, and these songs turn out to be incredibly popular because it does in fact sell. But we don’t listen to it because of the artistry, we listen because it is catchy. It seems like no one in the music business has originality anymore and the ones who do have been around for a long time and are big enough to get away from their record label’s image. For example, Lady Gaga put out her album Joanne which was released October 21, 2016, and it showed her true talents and didn’t follow the basic format of popular music. She even came out with a documentary entitled, “Five Foot Two” which shows how much strain the industry has put on her. She also has been known to speak publicly about this issue in the past.

So when did this turn happen? Well, I believe that 2009 was the end of the era of a pop star. Lady Gaga embodied the ideal image of the pop star. The definition of real pop is a white-hot blank. James Parker from the Atlantic states, “It sizzles into materiality in the form of this body or that body, this voice or that voice; it drapes itself in allusions, symbols, trinkets, scraps of dazzlement.” Gaga was the perfect pop star and early on in her career she stated, “The music is intended to inspire people to feel a certain way about themselves,” she told MTV, “so they’ll be able to encompass, in their own lives, a sense of inner fame that they can project to the world.” Pop in 2010 was thoroughly pornographized and extremely creative which made the mainstream not mainstream. Lady Gaga had paradoxical elegance with a mysterious feel for just how much of her freakery we are prepared to take in. When was the last time Ariana Grande made you feel that?

Now there is no Illusion. Everyone in music makes it quite obvious that they are there for the money since they almost have no originality. Rap is making a come back and yes those artists do have a level of talent that isn’t so controlled by the record company, but they still have A LOT of control. When was the last time you heard a new record from a pop artist that was original? You probably haven’t. Now we basically see robots of the machine producing the same song over and over again. I miss artists like Madonna, Michael Jackson, Elton John and David Bowie. These artists had real substance and an image that intrigued every listener to not only be a fan of the music but paired it with the illusion of the artist. There is no illusion anymore and I don’t think we will ever see it happen again in our lifetime unless someone wants to change the game like Lady GaGa did, but that would be a lot to hope for.
