LOGIC’S “1-800-273-8255”- SO MUCH MORE THAN JUST A HIT

LOGIC’S “1-800-273-8255”- SO MUCH MORE THAN JUST A HIT

The rapper Logic was previously known for his albums “Under Pressure”, “The Incredible True Story”, “Bobby Tarantino” with stand out tracks like “Nikki” which demonstrates how truly talented he is in songwriting and producing.

Logic got his first huge break with his third studio album Everbody (2017) which was his first to debut at number one in the U.S., with 247,000 album-equivalent units, of which 196,000 were pure album sales. He even had his first international top 10 single, “1-800-273-8255”, which reached number three on the Billboard Hot 100. The song was different from his previous works of music, but that worked to his advantage since it reached a huge audience. The song was not only well-done and popular but raised awareness to a very important issue in society today. Suicide is a sensitive topic and is taboo, but bringing it to light on such a huge platform was a great way to raise awareness. Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the US and each year 44,965 Americans die by suicide each year. So now the question arises- did Logic’s song help to prevent suicide?

The proof is the pudding: following a performance of the song at the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards, the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline says it saw a 50 percent increase in calls.

Check out the moving performance here:

John Draper, director of the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline praised the song and stated, “the calls don’t even begin to count the number of people who, just by listening to the song and hearing the lyrics, feel more hopeful and less alone. There’s really no measuring that impact.”

He also told CNN, “The impact has been pretty extraordinary. On the day the song was released, we had the second-highest call volume in the history of our service.”

It’s truly powerful to see the effect that Logic has done for his fans. He is showing that everyone struggles with depression, even when they are famous, they can still feel down. It is hard to tell what someone is going through since we all have our own personal battles but the most important thing to remember is that we are all human.

Now with the success of this song, he has a bigger and wider audience. In my opionion this wasn’t the rapper’s best song, due to the repetitive chorus but it did send him to instant stardom. I love seeing celebrities that use their platform for good, and also to put out quality content along with the message. The ripple of this song has caused quite the storm of people being more open about their mental health, and not being afraid to get help when they need it. We are one step closer to bringing the rate of suicide down. We truly only have this one life to live- might as well live it, even through the bad.

CHILDISH GAMBINO- TOO TALENTED TO RETIRE

CHILDISH GAMBINO- TOO TALENTED TO RETIRE

Donald Glover, also known as Childish Gambino is one of the most multifaceted artists today. He got his start by being a part of a sketch group Derrick Comedy, which led to him being hired by Tina Fey in 2006 to write for 30 Rock. He then released his first mixtape, Sick Boi, the previous year, using a name, Childish Gambino. His first official album was entitled Camp produced by Glassnote Records in 2011. His most recent release “Awaken, My Love!” was one of his most successful albums, with his single “Redbone” stayed for 44 weeks on the Billboard hot 100 chart. It was definitely the song of the summer, as it had it’s peak August 17th, 2017. One couldn’t turn on the radio without hearing the lyrics, “But stay woke, Niggas creepin’, They gon’ find you, Gon’ catch you sleepin’.” Not only was it a huge hit, but it made other rappers and R&B singers collectively step up their game due to the huge popularity of the song.

Donald Glover is not only a successful singer but also a refined comedian and actor. With all these talents he is bound to be at a crossroad of which one he should focus on. On June 3rd, the singer announced at Governor’s Ball Music Festival in New York City that his next album will be his last album. He has stated that he doesn’t feel like it is “necessary” anymore. This was shocking to the fans that have supported him since 2011, and also very sporadic when his single “Redbone” did so well on the charts. It was almost an insult to his fans to be ending his career in singing by playing it off as not important. Twitter went into a frenzy trying to comprehend that we would only be getting one more album by him.

Due to the backlash of his hasty statement, he elaborated on his plans during an interview with HuffPost. He stated, “There’s nothing worst than like a third sequel, like a third movie and we’re like, ‘again?’” he said. “Like I feel like there’s gotta be a reason to do things and I always had a reason to be punk. Being punk just always felt really good to me and we always looked at Atlanta as a punk show and I feel like the direction I would go with Childish Gambino wouldn’t be punk anymore. As much as ‘Redbone’ is a punk song because it’s a gospel song that’s on the radio, I’m like there’s only so far you can go before you just are the radio.”

So for the next Childish Gambino album, we can expect him to go outside his comfort zone and write songs that are more punk based, or he might experiment with other genres. Knowing the vast array of his talents, I am sure that we will be impressed by anything that he does. He has already mastered rap and even gone outside the norm to have a nontraditional song on the radio. I would love to see Donald Glover show us the different sides of him and expand outside of his comfort zone. I can’t wait for the next album and what he has to offer. To see him completely disappear from the music scene would be a waste of talent. We will miss you Childish Gambino and hopefully, we can convince you to stay around for just a little bit longer.

CRAZY NEW COLLABORATION “18”

CRAZY NEW COLLABORATION “18”

Rich Brian (previously known as Rich Chigga), Kris Wu, Trippie Redd, Joji and Baauer join forces in this posse-cut collaboration, with their song, “18” that was released, along with the video, on January 18, 2018.

Watch the Video Here:

This marks the first collab with these artists and they mix perfectly. Each of these artists has received a lot of views on their solo stuff and are definitely up and coming musicians. They all have gained popularity through the use of the internet and their capitalization of Youtube. Joji was actually the artist who actually started the Harlem Shake trend back in 2012.

All of these artists are exceptionally creative people, which has produced this combination of a fast paced and high energy video for “18.” The official music video directed by Alex Lee and Kyle Wightman of BRTHR films, who also previously worked with Travis Scott and The Weeknd. The video combines all their creative brilliance into a neon love child, with lasers in space and cute alien girls that serve as perfect background energy. The diversity of these artists is what is missing in rap and music today. Expect this video to get millions of views in the next month, because it is certainly impressive.

OFFSET SETS PEOPLE OFF

OFFSET SETS PEOPLE OFF

The rap group Migos, have been under fire this week due to Offset’s homophobic lyric on YFN Lucci’s new song “Boss Life.”

You can hear the song here:

Offset rhymes: “Pinky ring crystal clear, 40k spent on a private Lear / 60k solitaire / I cannot vibe with queers.” The term “queer” is not a term that should be taken lightly since it is very offensive to the gay community, which made his LGBT fans quite angry. Although rappers have used the term “faggot” in songs, “queer” hits lower than that in 2017 and new listeners were not so happy with his ability to just throw this term around. Also, the Migos have been accused of being homophobic in the past when they reportedly refused to perform onstage with drag queens during Katy Perry’s SNL performance of “Bon Appetit.”

After fans took to Twitter, The rapper Offset—a member of the hip-hop group Migos- issued a statement on Instagram after getting slammed for the homophobic lyric. He stated that it wasn’t meant to be homophobic and screenshotted a dictionary definition of the word “queer” that means “strange or peculiar.”

Overall, this might be a case of fans being overly sensitive since it was in fact just a lyric and not an attack on someone’s entire identity. This generation has the tendency to make a small thing into something much bigger. They tend to go crazy on social media and jump on the bandwagon without even knowing the full story, which has been displayed in this instance. So what do you think? Do you believe that the Migos are homophobic or just misguided? The apology did seem sincere, but was it due to the black lash? I would say we should keep listening to the Migos, but they should just become more mindful of the lyrics they put in their songs, or they might fade out.

CARDI BOND TO TAKE OVER THE THROWN

CARDI BOND TO TAKE OVER THE THROWN

The Bronx rapper Cardi B took 2017 by storm when her track “Bodak Yellow” dropped June 16, 2017, by Atlantic Records. In the three months since the debut of “Bodak Yellow,” the song climbed all the way to No. 2 on the Hot 100. VH1’s reality series Love and Hip-Hop made her a cultural phenomenon and she capitalized on this to its fullest extent. She went from the woman who made the vine “A Hoe Never Gets Cold” to top the Billboard charts, which was an unexpected gift that we keep thanking her for. This was pretty shocking and exciting to see a female rapper, besides Nicki Minaj getting so much attention and praise.

Watch Cardi’s famous vine here:

“Bodak Yellow” became one of the highest-charting songs by a solo female rapper since Nicki Minaj‘s “Anaconda,” which reached the same peak in 2014. Should Nicki be scared that Cardi is going to take her place? When there is a clash of interests, much like Nicki’s feud with Remy Ma, when Remy dropped ShETHER,” on February 25th, 2017. Nicki responded by teaming up with her Young Money crew by releasing “No Frauds” on March 14th, 2017. Nicki also has a history of disliking the previous queen of the rap game, Lil Kim. Nicki has a lot of bad history with other female rappers but she seems to have a liking towards Cardi B, which could be a result of actual fear. But I believe that Nicki is rooting for Cardi and taking her under her wing since Minaj has always been a proud feminist. It would be hard to take Nicki’s spot when she already has 15 top 100 tips on the Billboard Top 100. Migos, Nicki Minaj, Cardi B even released a song together, “Motorsport” on Dec 7, 2017.

Cardi B just dropped her latest single, “Bartier Cardi” ft. 21 Savage on December 22, 2017, and it is showing a lot of promise. She also just released a feature with Bruno Mars called, ‘Finesse’ that has jumped from just outside the Top 40, all the way to No. 3. Cardi seems to be getting bigger and better, which is only a positive. Love her or hate her, she is doing so much for the rap community and for female rappers that want to come up in the game. Nicki Minaj has been one of the only female rappers that have been on the charts for the last eight years, and I think we have grown tired of the same few rap verses on every pop song. Nicki’s verses have been played out and have been showing a lack of creativity, especially on her verse in “Swish Swish.” At least when we turn on the radio we will get more variety and another voice in this genre. I’m glad we can hear the phrase “money moves” besides “pussy on your sideburns” for once, and maybe this might make Nicki step up her game as well.
