GET INSIDE OF THE MIND OF DEATH GRIPS

Death Grips is an experimental hip-hop project started out in Sacramento, California and put out its first mixtape, Exmilitary, in 2011. They are composed of drummer Zach Hill and keyboardist Andy Morin accent the violently yelled raps of vocalist Stefan Burnett. They combine together to make a perfect team. They have been putting out music since 2011 and their latest release was in 2016. Even though they have been around for five years, I would say that most people don’t know them, which is a shame since they are so creative.

Just look at their music video for “I’ve Seen Footage”:

And you’ve probably heard of “Get Got”:

They manage to pair their quick raps with strong trippy visuals to really show the viewer that they are in fact losing their mind. The quickness of it all shows that it is happening at a fast pace, which helps create the setting that no one even knows what is going on. As the viewer, you are sent into a different reality that lays inside the mind of Death Grips. It takes on a new meaning to losing yourself in the music, but now we are losing ourselves in the full experience.

Just watch their video for “No Love”:

Overall this band combines rap, strong instrumentals, and creative visuals to create the theme of hysteria that produces something that is bigger than the both of them.

[BROOKE CANDY] STICK TO RAP

Brooke Candy is an American rapper and singer. She independently released videos for her songs “Das Me”, “Everybody Does” and “I Wanna Fuck Right Now” back in 2013. She then collaborated with photographer Steven Klein and stylist Nicola Formichetti on her eighth video, “Opulence”. Candy signed with RCA in February 2014.

Watch her early music videos here:

Candy has been compared to Gwen Stefani, Lady Gaga, CupcakKe and Nicki Minaj. These comparisons make sense due to her larger than life fashion style and her illusionary image. Her wigs and fashion add to the superstar quality in her voice. She has a “fuck off” attitude that translates into her music and her sound.

In 2016, she released music that has a more pop sound to it, and I am certainly not a fan. A highlight of her new sound is in her song, “Happy Days” but that was the only song I found enjoyable. Her look seems to have changed to more of a simplistic style. I used to take pride knowing about such a small up and coming artist, but now sometime seems off.

Check out one of her better pop songs, “Happy Days”:

She also released a song with Sia, entitled “Living Out Loud” which I think is complete crap. It sounds like every Sia song that has ever existed and has really strong similarities to her hit song “Chandelier.” Also, the chorus is extremely cliche and has almost no originality. It seems that everything that Brooke Candy got famous for, she turned her back on. It’s really surprising to see but once you get signed to a label, things can take a turn, and sometimes drastically.

Just listen to the train wreck of a song “Living Out Loud”:

So check out Brooke Candy, but only her earlier stuff. Hopefully, she ditches the pop scene and goes back to her true talent: rap.

INDIE ELECTRO-POP LOVE CHILD: GRIMES IS SET TO RELEASE NEW MUSIC IN 2018

Grimes, the indie electro-pop love child, just put out a statement that she was releasing her new album in 2018. For those who don’t know Grimes, she is a Canadian singer, songwriter, record producer and music video director. She is an extremely talented artist that does all her visuals for her own music videos and has really branded herself into a steady rise to stardom.

She got her start from writing experimental music while attending McGill University in Montreal. Although it was experimental, it combined all her talents to create something that has never been done before. It’s hard to put her in a genre since she is she is so original. She never loses sight of what made her big and continues to put out music that is true to herself but also music that tops what she is previously done. She really got her big break with her 2012 album release Visions which included songs like “Genesis,” “Oblivion,” and “Be A Body.” Not only did she make all the beats, sang all the vocals, played all the instruments and drew all the album artwork, she only did it in under a month with GarageBand, Adderall, and food her friends brought to her. Rolling Stone even called her, “The Triumph of a Self-Made Oddball.”

Check out the music video that started it all:

She gained a lot of popularity from her video, “Genesis” which was released August 22nd, 2012. She started off small but gained her audience from being completely out of the ordinary and setting a standard for popular electro-pop. Her video current day now has 50 million views. She is also a popular festival headliner.

Just check out this one-woman show in action:

It took three years after her album Visions to release her 2015 release, Art Angels which produced one of the best music videos of 2017 featuring Janelle Monáe. The video originally premiered on Tidal, but then shortly made its way to YouTube. Thank God because I can’t afford Tidal, but this video tempted me to put my credit card information in.

Check it out here:

Other highlights from her album included, “Flesh without Blood” and “Kill V. Maim.” So what can we expect from her next album? She states that she is venturing into “unexplored sonic landscapes” as she writes new music. I would expect her to do something crazy weird with this album, like maybe even put a punk element in it. Her 2015 album was so great because she got even weirder with her music, so I expect this album to be something we would never expect, but with the same level of creative genius, we all know she has, and what we are all secretly jealous of.

[UPCOMING ARTIST] KALO C

There is a new rap genius in town, and his name is Kalo C. He is an artist, model, songwriter, and actor. He is starting off in the rap game, and he is showing a lot of promise. He just released his song “Great Nigerian Student” and it really highlights all his best features.

His style in rap is almost like traveling back in time. He raps about real things, without having to mumble them and scream “SKRT” at random points during the song. He combines rap and reggae to get a hybrid of what is missing in rap today: authenticity. The song actually reminds me of the Black Eyed Peas, “Where is the Love?” as it carries the same message of searching for the answer that will never come. It serves as an anthem as he sings, “Everyday they ask me if I’m Okay, The Jehovah Will Show us The Way.” The chorus isn’t just a filler either but adds so much to the song. Besides just rapping about money and hoes, he sheds light on the struggle that students go through while highlighting his own struggle.

Check out the video here:

If you liked his vibe you should check out more of his songs to get a better feel for him.

Here is one of his covers:

THE 2018 PANORAMA MUSIC FESTIVAL LINEUP

The 2018 Panorama NYC music festival happens July 27-29 on Randall’s Island, and the lineup has just been announced! Presented by Goldenvoice, they have an incredible lineup this year with the best rappers in 2017 and 2018. This is a new festival since it was started in the summer of 2016, but it is making a name for itself by including amazing headlines and this might be their best year yet.

The headlines for the Friday, July 27th show are The Weekend, Migos, Father John Misty, The War On Drugs and Dua Lipa, including Jhene Aiko on the smaller stage. The headliners for the Saturday show on July 28th are Janet Jackson, SZA, Cardi B, Gucci Mane and St. Vincent. The other great performers like PVRIS and Japanese Breakfast. On The Sunday show, the headliners are The Killers, The XX (I am actually currently listening to their song right now!), Odesza, David Byrne, Fleet Foxes and other performers include Rex Orange County.

I would predict that the Saturday show will be the best since Janet Jackson has been an icon for a number of years. Also, the fact that Cardi B is going to be performing will draw a lot of people to the Saturday show. Gucci Mane has also been gaining extreme popularity this year, especially with his song, “I Get the Bag” ft. Migos. I also like that there are some alternative/indie bands performing. Having artists like St. Vincent, PVRIS, and Japanese Breakfast will give the show more variety in between all the huge rap acts.

Tickets go on sale Friday (2/2) at 10 AM, so make sure you are ready to buy them! There will also be two-day passes this year, in addition to the usual three-day and single-day passes. One day passes will be $125 dollars, two-day passes would be $200 dollars and the three-day passes are $275 dollars. So I hope you have saved up enough money because this show will definitely be one to remember.

What day will you be going?
