THE 2018 GRAMMYS WILL BE A NIGHT TO REMEMEBER

With the Grammys happening this Sunday, January 28th, 2018, it’s all people can talk about. The best part about the Grammys is the all-star performances by the most acclaimed stars in the industry today. So which performances should you look out for?

It is has been announced that artists like singer Sting, rapper Kendrick Lamar, and rock band U2 have been announced as part of the awards show list of performers. I hope Kendrick performs not only “Humble” but also “DNA” since both were phenomenal tracks that deserve to go noticed. Kendrick is sure to be one of the best performers of the night.

Pop star Lady Gaga will also perform a song off of her album “Joanne” which will probably be another rendition of her popular song, “Million Reasons” and based off her Super Bowl performance it will probably be a theatrical piano performance.

Watch Gaga’s Super Bowl performance here:

The Recording Academy has also revealed multiple paired acts: Miley Cyrus and Elton John are going to perform together, which excites the hell out of me. Miley Cryus’ album “Younger Now” has a lot of country influences, as well as pop. Her best songs on the album include, “A Week Without You” and “Bad Mood” that show her growth as an artist and the extreme vocal talent she has. Pairing up with Elton John, one of the biggest artists in history, it is bound to be beautiful.

Check out Miley’s vocal talent here:

Bruno Mars and Cardi B will also be performing their latest remix, “Finesse.” I am really excited to see the visuals, lighting and artistic choices that they bring to the stage. I predict that this will be the biggest performance of the night since it has racked up about 135 million views in under a month. Hopefully, Cardi will break into “Bodack Yellow” after the collab with Bruno. It’s crazy how Cardi B went from performing “Bodack Yellow” at the MTV Video Music Awards pre-show to sharing the Grammy stage with one of the biggest artists currently.

Watch Cardi’s performance at the MTV pre-show here:

Emmylou Harris and Chris Stapleton are also performing. Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee are expected to take the stage with Zuleyka Rivera, who appeared in Fonsi and Yankee’s “Despacito” music video, which was a smash hit.

There will also be a performance of DJ Khaled’s “Wild Thoughts” which will be accompanied by pop star Rihanna and Bryson Tiller. Since this song was so popular, and a great track to put out after DJ Khaled’s huge success with, “I’m the One” ft. Justin Bieber, Quavo, Chance the Rapper, Lil Wayne. Rihanna has been huge this year, especially since her recent release, “Lemon” so I’m sure her fashion during the performance will be something to remember.

Logic, Alessia Cara, and Khalid’s joint performance will feature both suicide attempt survivors and suicide loss survivors, according to the Recording Academy. The trio’s suicide prevention hit, “1-800-273-8255,” is nominated for Song of the Year. Since his performance at the MTV VMAs in 2017 was the highlight of the night, I’m sure he will even top this performance.

Watch the MTV VMA performance here:

Other singers include Sting; Irish rock band U2, which will give a nice rock touch to the performances. Also, pop singers Pink, Kesha and Sam Smith; rapper Childish Gambino; R&B artist SZA and country quartet Little Big Town have all been named. Pink always puts on a great show, and I’m excited to see Kesha performing since it has been the first time in 8 years since she put out an album. I also can’t wait to see Childish Gambino performing one of the best songs of the year, “Redbone.”

Since it’s been about 15 years since the Grammys were held in New York it is bound to be a crazy night, and I am predicting that it will be one of the best Grammys to happen in the last 10 years. The quality of music has been at an all-time high this year, and new genres and styles of rap and hip-hop are appearing. Expect everyone to be dressed to the 10s and giving their best performance. After researching the performers I am definitely tuning into the Grammys this year.

THE GRAMMYS- WHO WILL WIN BEST RAP SONG

The 60th Annual Grammy Awards will be at 7:30 PM – 11:00 PM on Sunday, January 28, 2018, which means it is this week. Everyone is thinking about how the turnout will be and who will win the awards for their efforts in 2017. The radio this year was primarily rap, and new artists appeared out of nowhere and took the throne. There has really been a shift in the music industry where the rappers are the new rock stars. There was a lot of songs to choose from, but who do you think will win the best rap song at the Grammys?

And the nominees are…

Bodak Yellow by Cardi B:

Chase Me by Danger Mouse Featuring Run The Jewels & Big Boi:

Humble by Kendrick Lamar:

Sassy by Rapsody:

The Story Of O.J by Jay-Z:

It seems like “Bodak Yellow”, “Humble” and “The Story of O.J” are the frontrunners based on the extreme popularity and airplay. I haven’t even heard of “Chase me” and “Sassy” until I looked up the nominations. They are good songs, but it doesn’t match the cultural phenomenon of these songs. I would predict that “Humble” by Kendrick Lamar will win since the song literally sent the whole world in a state of shock when he put out his record “DAMN” on April 14, 2017, by Top Dawg Entertainment, Aftermath Entertainment, and Interscope Records. I am surprised that his other single “DNA” wasn’t nominated as well. Kendrick completely changed the game and told every rapper to “Sit Down” as he claimed his throne as one of the best rappers in this generation. But with that being said, “Bodak Yellow” also had extreme cultural importance. It flooded the radios and set a standard for females in rap. This was one of the first huge songs from a female rapper besides Nicki Minaj, so it definitely made an impact not only on music but also as a statement to the world. But overall I feel like Jay-Z is bound to win just because he has had decades of dominance and is a true icon. And who doesn’t love Jay-Z?

A$AP ROCKY – “MONEY BAGS FREESTYLE”

A$AP Rocky dropped another one.  It’s only been a few days since he put out “5IVE STAR$” and “ABOVE”.  Lastnight, he came through with a new track named “Money Bags Freestyle.”  The song was shared on AWGE’s official Soundcloud and is dope as hell.  Rocky caught me by surprise when I heard him freestyling over a looped version of R.Kelly’s “Half On a Baby”.  It’s something nice and chill for your smoke sessions.  Play the Harlem rapper’s new song from off of his next album, presumably called Dummie, below.

As you can see, Rocky’s switching up his style this year.  He’s definitely not a just some rapper, but also an artist.  A great one at that (He’s one of my top favorites, JS)  Check out this interesting video I found  him, and T-Pain on the keys as well!

MUSIC VIDEO REVIEW- AFTER THE STORM

One of the best music videos in 2018 just dropped on January 25, 2018. Kali Uchis just dropped the video for “After The Storm” ft. Tyler, The Creator, Bootsy Collins, which are both incredible artists. The song possesses a melancholy beat that wishes for a better tomorrow, that displays the emotions of getting over a bad night. Kali wishes tomorrow will be kinder.

The music video is even better than the song, which gives a lot of gravity to the music. Kali Uchis is displayed with minimal makeup in the beginning as she wakes up to have her cereal. Then her makeup has yellow tones as she goes to the grocery store. Then she gets a pink and blue makeup change near the end as she is lounging in her backyard. Birds then hold up her hair to symbolize her oneness with nature. The music video shows how lonely she is by doing all these mundane tasks alone. But it also holds the theme that she is ok with being alone and is hoping for someone to save her. It seems like she is trapped in time.

It then pans out to the lawn where Tyler The Creator is a part of the grass, almost stalking her. His face is covered in grass as he raps “Kali, what you mean?, I take it offensive, ‘Cause I’m the hottest flower boy, That popped up on the scene, Feeling better, better than ever, ‘Cause your umbrella, -brella (-brella, light), Sun is beaming on me like headlights beaming on Bambi, Now let’s pretend the street is the room, And you are a Camry, ‘Cause your drama candid, The Tito to my Randy, Now let’s produce some thrillers, My chocolate wit’ yo’ vanilla, uh” I love the line about him being the flower boy because it displays he wants to be a part of her wedding while also stating his longing for her. Then it goes into Tyler taking on the weather by sitting outside for her for the whole year including all different seasons.

All the different colors that Kali is wearing shows all the emotions she is feeling, which is a great transition to different parts of the song. Kali is really in a state of constant numbness from this breakup, which shows when she sheds a tear with no emotion displayed on her face. This music video is really about a couple who broke up and they are worse on their own, and they are both longing for each other throughout the years. At the end of the song, they get back together which is certain since they miss each other so much. I love the visuals of their kids having leaves on their head. Overall this is a great music video that displays the lyrics of the song through the visuals of the seasons and different colors. Another great release by Kali Uchis and Tyler the Creator.

CULTURE II HAS NOW ARRIVED

This morning a ton of hip-hop fans woke up to Culture II.  Migos, the Atlanta trio dropped their much-anticipated third studio album and it’s pretty decent.  The 24-song tracklist features guest appearances from Drake, Travis Scott, Gucci Mane, Big Sean, 2 Chainz, 21 Savage, Nicki MInaj, Cardi B, Ty Dolla $ign, and Post Malone.  If you listen to the production on this album you’ll see Metro Boomin, Honorable C Note, Buddah Bless, 808 Gods, Pharrell, Cardo, Cassius Jay, Zaytoven, Ricky Racks, OG Parker, Fki, Mike Dean, Kanye West, Earl the Pearl, and Quavo himself all took part.

Check out the Culture 2 below and see if you what you think.  Overall, the album was cool but I expected it to better. Besides “MotorSport” and “Stir Fry”, “BBO”, “White Sand”, and “Auto Pilot” are probably the ones I actually like most.  You may agree that this project’s a little too long for you (There are some unnecessary tracks on there LOL) but look at it this way, that’s just more material for them REAL fans to sink their teeth into.

BRIGHT’S SOUNDTRACK IS BETTER THAN THE MOVIE

“Bright” the movie might have a better soundtrack than the actual movie. Bright, starring Will Smith premiered December 22nd, 2017 and didn’t have the best reviews. It is an action-thriller directed by David Ayer, who also directed the huge movie, Suicide Squad. It is set in an alternate present-day where humans, orcs, elves, and fairies that have been coexisting. It follows two cops from very different backgrounds. Ward, a human (Will Smith), and Jakoby, an orc (Joel Edgerton), are night patrol cops that are battling both their own personal differences while working together to protect a young female elf and a thought-to-be-forgotten relic, which in the wrong hands could destroy everything. It only got a 26% on Rotten Tomatoes, which isn’t so hot.

The best part about this movie is the soundtrack entitled, “Bright: The Album” including big names like the indie band, Bastille, Machine Gun Kelly, Camila Cabello, Ty Dolla $ign, Future, Snoop Dogg, Lil Uzi Vert, Steve Aoki, A$AP Rocky, Alt-J, and Migos.

The stand out track is definitely the track by the Migos & Marshmello – Danger. This track is even better than Migo’s new single, “SupaStars.”

Check out my review of “Supastars” here.

The Migos sings, “On the dark side, if you keep cold, it’s a cold case, In my right mind, I can write rhymes ’til I road rage, It’s a yellow ten on my left wrist, and that’s all place
On my knees, thanking God that he got me through the pain.” The background vocals of “Danger” is sung is a way that isn’t traditional to the Migos’ call outs which works really well for them. It is stated in a serious tone that really portrays the risk they are in and sets the tone of a fast-paced song. The lyrics really hold this song together and make it such a strong record and one of their best songs that I have heard so far.

So what do you think? Do you think it’s a good movie, or did the soundtrack stand out more?
