DRAKE’S NEW SINGLE ‘GODS PLAN’ BROKE NEW SPOTIFY RECORD

DRAKE’S NEW SINGLE ‘GODS PLAN’ BROKE NEW SPOTIFY RECORD

This a another day, another record-breaking accomplishment for Drake.  The 6GOD never fails to surprise us with his new releases and on Monday  (Jan. 22), his latest single hit a whopping 4,326,679 plays.  The next day, the team at Chart Data reported that Drake’s “God’s Plan” released on his two-song, Scary Hours EP, cracked Spotify’s single-day streaming record.  This shouldn’t be a surprise to many, but even if I were Drake I’d congratulate myself on Instagram, too.  Take a look at Drizzy’s post below:

MAROON 5- THE DICTIONARY DEFINITION OF A SELL OUT

MAROON 5- THE DICTIONARY DEFINITION OF A SELL OUT

Remember when Maroon 5 used to put out actual quality music?

In February 2005 the music industry rewarded Maroon 5 by presenting them with a Grammy Award for Best New Artist. Their album “Songs about Jane” certainly shot them to superstardom with songs like “She Will Be Loved”, “This Love” and “Harder to Breathe”. On their 2007 release, “It Won’t be Soon Before Long” it included the massive hit, “Won’t Go Home Without You.” They were certainly on top of their game and had decent radioplay and significant airtime on MTV. They were respectable artists with a great sound that combined whimsical lyrics with melancholy undertones. They could be categorized as more of a soft rock band on, “Songs about Jane”. No one could deny that Maroon 5 was certainly a well-rounded band with a clear vision. So how did it get so blurry?

The release of their 2010 album “Hands All Over” marked their first full step into a strictly pop sound. The single, “Moves like Jagger” featuring Christina Aguilera was a huge success, staying 49 weeks on the chart and hitting the number one position on the Billboard hot 100. After this massive hit, I feel like Maroon 5 gathered the tools for success on the radio and applied it to all their projects after that. A catchy chorus, another popular artist to feature on the bridge, some form of whistling, and sticking to a tiresome beat that is played two to four times throughout the song. They have formulated the art of singing about a topic with some repetitive lyrics that brush the subject but don’t say anything too deep. It is structured to get stuck in your head, but the catchiness does not hide the poor content.

This was solidified with their 2012 release “Payphone” on their album, “Overexposed”, which kind of has the same exact layout as “Moves Like Jagger”:

Also, notice the similarities in their 2014 release, “Animals” on their album “V”:

Their latest single, “Don’t Wanna Know” Feat. Kendrick Lamar really highlights all the problems of pop music today, and really shows that Maroon 5 is not hiding the fact that they are using the same basic formula to gain airplay.

Although they have been on the radio for a long time, their legacy will not stay. They have had three number one hits, 13 top 10 hits and 28 songs on the Billboard top 100, but they lack the authenticity they started out with. It just doesn’t seem like it is earned when they have moved so far away from their original image and message. I do not see the entertainment quality of repeating a chorus a thousand times and the same basic phrase over and over again.

It seems like the Adam Levine show at this point, which makes me wonder why they even keep the title of Maroon 5 when their first album and latest album sound nothing alike. We will never get back the Maroon 5 we knew and loved because they are making an extreme amount of money. I would say that they are the dictionary definition of a “sell-out.” They sold their soul to the radio, and they are not coming back but instead going to release another pop garbage single that will follow all the cliches, which will get airtime just from the comfortability and repetition of the standards of “popular” music. I understand that bands grow, change and experiment with their sound, but this seems like Maroon 5 has hidden motives, rather than just evolving as an artist. Being a fan of Maroon 5 has been disappointing as we watched them dissolve into puppets of the machine.

KALI UCHIS- UP AND COMING SUPERSTAR

Kali Uchis is a Colombian-American singer, songwriter, record producer, music video director, and fashion designer. She handles much of the creative direction in her music, such as designing cover art, directing music videos, and tailoring the 60s-chic/90s-urban style. Her greatest asset is plotting backing vocals that were popular in the 60’s and 70’s while giving it a contemporary feel. She can even put out a whole song in less than 10 minutes.

Check out her stand out tracks:

Due to her talent, style and vocal performance, she is showing signs of becoming the next big thing. She has even collaborated with bigger artists who also see that. Her first album, “Por Vida” which came out in 2015, had contributions from Tyler, The Creator, Kaytranada, and BADBADNOTGOOD. It is certainly is a great album that is needed in R&B today.

She has also been featured on the extremely popular English Virtual band, Gorillaz’s song, “She’s my Collar.”

Tyler the Creator also seems to like her style, as she was featured in his song, “PERFECT.”

About a week ago she released another collaboration with Tyler entitled, “After The Storm” which almost has a million views already.

In addition to these collborations, she has also worked with Snoop Dog, she told Billboard her about her experience:

“Snoop saw “What They Say,” I think. Someone put him on to it — it was all word of mouth shit. He loved that I sampled Brenton Wood and loved the aesthetic and the low-rider culture behind it, so he was like, “I have to work with her.” He gave me a song on his mixtape.”

With so many big artists collaborating with her and seeing the potential she has, there is no doubt that she will shortly be blown up into superstardom. Check her out, she is truly an artist to look out for.

LIL YACHTY AND TAKEOFF TAPE COMING SOON

I smell a Takeoff / Yachty tape coming. It’s 2018 and the underrated Migos rapper, Takeoff is the last one of the group to release a collab tape. Recently Yachty previewed a collaboration tape between the two of them on his Instagram alive session and turns out that it’s coming real soon! With Yachty’s promising fans waiting on his drop for Lil Boat 2, there’s no set date when their tape will drop. In the meantime, stay tuned for the Migo’s new debut album Culture II, which will be released on January 26th.

N.E.R.D & RIHANNA- LEMON

N.E.R.D & RIHANNA- LEMON

Every album Rihanna puts out breaks the barriers of what we thought we could expect from her. Not only has she completely redefine herself she has the music to back it up.

Rihanna got her start in 2005 with “Pon de Replay”, which reached the top five in twelve countries. She followed that up with consistent great albums, “A Girl like Me” in 2006, “Good Girl Gone Bad: Reloaded” in 2008, which included the hit single, “Umbrella”, “Rated R” in 2009, “Loud” in 2010- with almost every song turning into a single due to the popularity. Then “Talk That Talk” in 2011 which was a radio goldmine, “Unapologetic” in 2012 which contained the extremely popular song “Diamonds”, and finally “Anti” in 2016. “Anti” had a sound that she has not really done before but it was one of her best albums.

“Anti” was her first record since leaving Def Jam, and “Anti” marks the introduction of a new Rihanna, the one who isn’t so controlled by a record company. On “Loud” you could tell that the record company was heavily involved with her image as she was collaborating with the hottest artists on the Billboard chart, not really branching out from her stage persona. Her features included Drake in “What’s My Name”, David Guetta’s track “Who’s That Chick?” and on Nicki Minaj’s track “Fly.” Even though Rihanna was on the radio constantly, the fans really didn’t know anything about her as a person. But with the release of “Anti,” the listener can see more of her personal style, which shows her growth as an artist. There is definitely a switch from her previous electro-pop sound to a more refined sound defined by her personality, that we always knew she had.

See Rihanna’s transformation here:

But Rihanna and N.E.R.D’s new track “Lemon” goes even further than that. At first listen, I didn’t even know it was Rihanna since she has never done rap before. It is a pleasant surprise that actually works. She is now going outside her genre of pop to show us even more of talent she possesses. Being able to do other genres, and have it work is the sign of a true icon.

An artist that evolves, is an artist that stays. “Lemon” officially landed Rihanna’s 50th Top 40 single. The only female artist that is ahead of her is Taylor Swift who has 55 Top 40 singles. Rihanna is currently tied with The Beatles and has surpassed Madonna who has 40. Who knows how long Rihanna’s rain will continue? Based on the last 13 years I would predict it not only is here to stay but to thrive. Anti truly marked her as an icon, and “Lemon” is shoving it in everyone’s faces.
