Grammy Award-winning, Kendrick Lamar has signed a publishing deal with Broadcast Music Inc. to represent his music catalog. The company features over 900,000 songwriters, including Top Dawg Entertainment label-mates SZA, Jay Rock, and Schoolboy Q.
The EVP of BMI’s Creativity and Licensing released a press statement on Monday, related to the signing of Kendrick: “We’re thrilled to welcome Kendrick to the BMI family and expand our great working relationship with Top Dawg Entertainment and its incredibly talented roster. Kendrick’s gift for writing and performing such stunningly impactful music has solidified his stature among the world’s greatest artists and, without a doubt, as a major force in our industry for many years to come. We’re honored that he has chosen BMI to represent his creative works.”
Kendrick is certainly a gifted writer, as he is considered one of rap’s greatest lyricists and has even won a Pulitzer Prize. His writing should be protected and archived at all costs.
Previously, Kendrick was with Warner/Chappell Music.
In a recent Instagram post, Lil Xan announced that he will be taking a break from Instagram. The caption was, “sad, mad, confused. I Love you guys no matter what tho and to all the haters feel free to use me as a punching bag for your own insecurities, going mia for awhile, need to get away from the devil (social media) but if you see me on the street say wassup”.
Ever since he burst onto the Soundcloud rap scene, Lil Xan has been a controversial artist that has gotten more than his fair share of social media abuse. He has been outspoken about the abuse and the adverse effects it has had on him. For that reason, I don’t find him calling social media “the devil” to be extreme at all. To him, that must be the reincarnation of Lucifer, or at least a breeding ground for them.
It’s been a rough couple months for Lil Xan. He checked into rehab late last year and his girlfriend Annie supposedly had a miscarriage. The two almost broke up since Lil Xan thought that it was faked, and the current status of the relationship is unclear. Let’s hope things turn around for the “Betrayed” rapper.
Russ was kicked out of the club at Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, Saturday night. He was scheduled to perform but only after a few minutes into his set, started going on a rant against the venue because of technical difficulties.
Russ tweeted after the fact, ““Sorry to the fans that came out. Like I said on stage, I wasn’t gonna let the venue fuck up the show repeatedly without sayin something to y’all who paid money, waited etc..they didn’t like me calling them out. Like i also said, they’ll tell a different story but y’all saw 🤷🏽♂️😞.”
Fans at the show are supporting Russ on Twitter and confirm his side of the story. However, according to The Blast, Russ and his crew arrived with faulty microphones and after the club scrambled to find replacements, Russ wouldn’t stop being difficult.
It’s not clear who exactly is at fault but it’s likely it will become evident who is really to blame for this fiasco. In any case, Russ has stated that he will be back to Vegas, but not performing at a club.
With help from director WALU, 21 Savage has released the music video for his song “ball w/o you”. The song is from his critically acclaimed 2018 album, i am > i was.
The video shows a night out of the girl who was disloyal to 21 Savage. Interspersed with clips of 21 rapping the song inside a high-end house, we see the girl out at a club and constantly taking selfies. After drinking too much, the girl eventually passes out in the bathroom and is carried out by security. We are then shown the pictures that she took that make it seem like she had a great night out, when it’s clear it really was the opposite. The final shot is of the girl taking a selfie with her luggage in the driveway of 21’s house.
The lyrics of the song fit with the video as both show examples of disloyalty that really get under 21’s skin. The girl is disloyal both online and in real life.
Loyalty meas a lot to 21. As he puts in the song, “I’d rather have loyalty than love/Cause love really don’t mean jack/See love is just a feeling/You can love somebody and still stab them in they back/It don’t take much to love/You can love somebody just by being attached/See loyalty is a action/You can love or hate me and still have my back”. Basically, as 21 puts poetically, it means a lot more to him that someone is loyal than loves him because actions speak louder than words/feelings. It’s relatively easy to love someone, or at least think you do, than to act loyally to them. Humans think and feel a lot of things that they don’t act upon, and it’s really the thoughts and feelings that get acted upon that count.
Three years and three scrapped albums later we have SchoolboyQ new album “Crash Talk” and with that TDE is starting its summer run. Laced with 14 tracks with features coming from Travis Scott, Kid Cudi, Lil Baby, 21 Savage, Ty Dolla Sign, 6Lack and YG this is very different from his last album that had features all over.
This album gives you a different feeling than his previous one as you hear a more mature Schoolboy. Even the rollout was different as he delayed his release because of the tragic death of rapper Nipsey Hussle. On “Crash Talk” Q flexes his storytelling abilities on “Tales“, while also giving the G’d up Q on tracks “Gang Gang,” “Die With Em,” and “5200“.
But what’s most surprising about the album is how conscious Q has become especially about how his choices affect his daughter and he also talks about his mental health state. On track “Dangerous” Q talks of drug addiction and self-doubt with the help of Kid Cudi hummings( at this point Cudi’s humming is a cheat code). On “Crash” he talks of having to do better because of his daughter, while also kicking game to the youth about self-love, money desicons, and knowledge because one day one of them have to meet his daughter.
Q also comes through with an all west coast summer track on “Lies” with assists from TY and YG. This R&B track is sure to be played everywhere because catfishing and people lying are always prevalent in society today. Q also comes with chill car ride track in “Floating” that comes with a smooth 21 Savage verse. The last track “Attention” has Q paying his respects with some of the greats from Jay-Z. Nas, Dre, Alchemist, while also giving a backstory of himself.
This album is solid for Q, it shows how time has changed him to be more conscious of his self and how his choice affects the people around him. It is also good knowing that Q is in a better mental state that he has been in the previous years. If this is the sign that TDE is starting to make its presence felt again they are starting on a good note with this project. You can stream “Crash Talk” on all major media platforms.
