[NEW VIDEO] SOCCER MOMMY ‘COOL’

Soccer Mommy is an upcoming indie band that knows how to capture their aesthetic perfectly in music videos.

Their new music video for “Cool” is certainly cool.

Check it out here:

Released last week, March 27th, 2018– it has gained a lot of traction. Although she is in college now, she brings it back to a lot of high school themes and angst, which we all still probably feel. The first scene is shot on a field that seems like it is a part of a high school. Filmed on a soccer field, she definitely is becoming her self-fulfilled prophecy a soccer mommy. The next scene pans to a lighter scene with the band playing on a bright yellow backdrop, along with her pink eyeliner. She is shown at a desk, probably overthinking about her crush. The slow pace of this song really shows how much she is truly overthinking and longing for this guy to like her, while not knowing how to go about it.

The last scene shows her in more makeup dancing with some male friends, which means she has achieved her goal of being a cool girl. She is singing about being cool but it seems like she is the cool girl. I wouldn’t want to play Sophie Allison if I was you.

[CARDI B & MIGOS] ‘DRIP’ DOESN’T DROP

Cardi B has been one of the best new artists of 2017. Her hit “Bodak Yellow” sent her to instant stardom. After the song, she began being featured on other songs including “MotorSport” featuring the Migos and Nicki Minaj. She started associating herself with the big players in the industry and made a name for herself. She released “Bartier Cardi” which was a great song that showed that she wasn’t just a one-hit wonder. She was one of the most unexpected but needed artists of 2017. So what can we expect from her debut album? Well, we were expecting more than this.

Cardi B’s album Invasion of Privacy will be dropping this Friday, April 6th, 2018. She has teased the album with some song releases and the latest is “Drip” featuring the Migos. It was released last night and of course, we went to listen to it to see if she could give us more than the letdown, “Be Careful.”

Listen to “Drip” here:

The cover art looks dope, but it doesn’t make up for the pure ridiculousness of this song. How did the Migos- the biggest breakout stars of 2016 and 2017- make a song that sounds so cringe-worthy? Maybe Offset is really pissed off at Cardi for “Be Careful”- I would be too. The song starts off with the chorus that goes, “came through dripping- DRIP DRIP” and then the Migos say “ICE” in the background track. It seems like it was written in ten minutes in the back of a car. The laziness really does shine through. Also, the theme of diamonds on her wrist has been very overplayed. The highlight of this song is Cardi’s verse which seems to be a recurring theme on her tracks. Her verses are good but the songs seem to be poorly executed. She really should have spent more time working on this album because it seems to be thrown together at the last second. The Migos then recycle their typical verses and the song ends- finally.

Overall, I guess we will all have to make our final judgments when the album is released, but it doesn’t seem promising.

BIRDMAN & LIL WAYNE: HAS THE FEUD COME TO AN END?

Of course we’re all familiar with the fall out between the Father and Son duo of Birdman and Lil Wayne. The pair that were once inseparable became distant with some dissing here and there on a couple tracks. But have they hashed it out?

Recently, Birdman and Weezy have been seen in public which leads to speculation that two have squashed their beef. On an interview with Beats 1 Radio’s Ebro Darden, Birdman spoke out on the situation and the complicated relationship between the two.

Birdman shed some light on that fact that their legal battle has been affecting their family lives, and that wasn’t okay. He says:

It’s just so many parts to it, but I’m not gon’ let it just lay like that,” he said. “Not even … I ain’t worrying about it benefiting me. He deserve that from me, and I’m gonna give him that. We gotta get this shit together ’cause it’s affecting our kids. And that’s not cool at all…His daughter’s my godchild,” he continued. “I love her to death. [She’s] my favorite. But guess what, they all talk. My kids talk to his kids. He talk to my children all the time. It’s just a weird relationship, but it’s solid.”

Check out the interview below and tell us what you think.

ON THIS DATE IN HIP HOP HISTORY [APRIL 1ST]

So we’re going to do things a little different today. April 3rd was a relatively slow day, so we’re going to jump back a few days to April 1st, and you’ll see why. I will point out that on April 3rd, 2008, Wayne “Freeze” Frost of the The Rock Steady Crew passed away. The Rock Steady Crew was a hip hop and breaking group that was best known for their international smash hit “Hey You” in 1983 and their breakdancing style.

April 1st has been a busy day in hip hop history. I’ll break it all down for in chronological order, starting with the earliest event. We start our ride in 1987 when Public Enemy released their debut album Yo! Bum Rush The Show. Chuck D and Flavor Flav brought a powerful and unique lyrical style to dope scratches from DJ Terminator X. The trio were known for their incredibly political music. Hailing from Long Island, New York, Public Enemy took their name seriously and turned the sounds of that era into messages that spoke to the black community and youth. They caught a lot of heat from the mainstream media for their outspoken views but that never stopped them. All four of their first albums have been certified either gold or platinum and it’s all dope. Chuck D was as raw as they come as an MC and Flavor Flav’s personality played great off of it. Be sure to check out Yo! Bum Rush The Show and the rest of their discography, you won’t regret it.

Speaking of raw MC’s, EPMD released their second album Unfinished Business on April 1st, 1989.  Erick & Parrish Making Dollars, better known as EPMD, was started by Erick Sermon and Parrish Smith in 1986. Like Public Enemy, EPMD came out of Long Island.EPMD would change hip hop forever with their sound. Both E and PMD were great rappers and knew their way around a punchline. Their production style helped shift the focus from electronic sounding samples to using breaks from funk and rock records.  They had five straight gold records from 1988 to 1997. EPMD have to be in the discussion whenever you’re talking about the all-time greats. They revolutionized the game and helped grandfather in an entire new era of hip hop. If you’ve never heard an EPMD record before, slap yourself, then go find one.

We’ll end our lesson for today with DJ Kool and one of the most known records of all time. DJ Kool released Let Me Clear My Throat on April 1st, 1996, and we haven’t stopped listening since. The version that sticks with us today was recorded live at Bahama Bay. The track uses two key samples,“Hollywood Swinging” (1974) by Kool and the Gang and “The 900 Number” (1987) by The 45 King. DJ Kool interacts with crowd making it perfect for parties and sporting events. Many remixes were made with a bunch of different rappers from the era laying down different verses. This track was anywhere and everywhere people were getting hyped up and still gets crowds going. I’ll leave the original in a video below just because it is a personal favorite.

Now I hope you’ve got nothing to do for the rest of the day cause I just gave you plenty of music to catch up on. Get comfy and start bumping.
