[SPORTS] NBA POWER RANKINGS: RAPTORS AT THE TOP; CLIPPERS RISE

Franchise Start For Toronto Has Them Leading The Pack

The NBA regular-season is almost in the great white month of December already, how about that?

All I’ve been asked about lately is why I haven’t done NBA Power Rankings, a good question to ask to be honest as we’re in Week 7 of the 2018-19 season.

My response? It’s fun to look at other writers who do and who have, but for me personally it doesn’t feel needed to have a power ranking system with teams less than 15 games into the season.

We’re starting to see teams separate themselves from the pack (kind of), and not every team is clustered together with the same record, making it tough to distinguish who from who.

To this point, it’s been an interesting season to say the least, one in-which most preseason favorites are looking unsettled and still figuring things out. Two teams that were in the conference finals last season, the Boston Celtics and Houston Rockets, are both sitting at .500 post-Thanksgiving.

There’s plenty of time for those teams, as well as a number of slumbering clubs to figure it out as the NBA season is a marathon, not a sprint.

Here are my NBA Power Rankings for the Week of 11/19 – 11/25.

1. Toronto Raptors (17-4)

After a scare in Orlando, the Toronto Raptors won their next three games by an average of 14.7 points to finish the week 4-0.

2. Milwaukee Bucks (14-5)

The Bucks are off to a strong start, but their puzzling loss at home to the Phoenix Suns last week prove there’s plenty of work to be done.

3. Golden State Warriors (14-7)

Golden State is 4-5 without Stephen Curry in the lineup, but Kevin Durant carried the team on his back in their past two victories, averaging 38 points in those wins.

4. Oklahoma City Thunder (12-7)

The Oklahoma City Thunder saw a seven-game home winning streak end on Friday night at the hands of the Nuggets, and Russell Westbrook’s 1-for-12 game from beyond the arc was a big reason why. He’s shooting a putrid 17 percent from deep to begin the season.

5. Philadelphia 76ers (14-8)

Philadelphia has some explaining to do for a 121-112 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers on their home court last Friday, but Jimmy Butler helped ease the pain of that loss with his dagger 3-pointer on Sunday at the Barclays, his second game winner since joining the 76ers.

6. Los Angeles Clippers (13-6)

The only people more shocked by the Los Angeles Clippers start almost a quarter into the 2018-19 season is Las Vegas. Clips have done it by taking care of business at home, where they’ve won eight straight games.

7. Memphis Grizzlies (12-7)

The Memphis Grizzlies are off to the kind of start we’ve been accustomed to, and the leading cause of that is their defense, which is allowing a league-low 100.9 PPG.

8. Denver Nuggets (13-7)

After dropping six out of their past seven games, the Nuggets responded by winning their next three games, including two on the road over previous Western Conference playoff teams from a season ago.

9. Boston Celtics (10-10)

Brad Stevens may have said it best when he said there’s a myriad of issues permeating for the Boston Celtics. One of them? They’re one of the worst offenses in the NBA. Boston is third worst in the NBA in field goal percentage at 43.7 percent.

10. Los Angeles Lakers (11-8)

The Lakers are grinding out wins, but they couldn’t grind out a in their final game of the week on Sunday in a 108-104 loss to the Orlando Magic. It’s the second time Los Angeles has loss to Orlando in nine days.

11. Portland Trail Blazers (12-8)

The Portland Trail Blazers have lost three straight games, two of those losses came by 28 and 43 points last week. Ouch.

12. Houston Rockets (9-9)

The Houston Rockets appeared to have turned the corner on their sour start to the season with five consecutive wins, but we’re now questioning once again what this team is after an overtime loss in Detroit and a embarrassing loss the following night in Cleveland.

13. Indiana Pacers (11-8)

The Indiana Pacers are very much functioning like the team we saw a season ago. They are 6-7 in games where their opponents score 100+ points. When they don’t? Indiana’s 5-1 in games where they hold opponents under 100 points.

14. Orlando Magic (10-10)

The Orlando Magic were looking for Aaron Gordon to ascend this season into a possible All-Star, but if there’s an All-Star on this team, it’s Nikola Vucevic. Vucevic is averaging 20.4 PPG, 11.3 RPG and 3.6 APG to begin the season.

15. Detroit Pistons (10-7)

A 3-1 week has Dwane Casey’s Detroit Pistons feeling good about themselves. They’ll continue a six-game homestand against the New York Knicks, Chicago Bulls and Golden State Warriors this week.

16. New Orleans Pelicans (10-10)

The New Orleans Pelicans road woes to begin the season come as a surprise. They are 2-9 on the road a season after finishing seven games above .500 away from the Smoothie King Center.

17. Sacramento Kings (10-10)

Sacramento had a .500 week against teams that made the postseason last season in the Western Conference, nearly escaping Golden State with a win. Not bad for one of the NBA’s youngest teams.

18. San Antonio Spurs (9-10)

The San Antonio Spurs aren’t winning on the road, putting up a 3-7 mark away from home to begin the season.

19. Dallas Mavericks (9-9)

If Dallas ever finds a way to win on the road, we can start talking Western Conference playoff contender as soon as this season. While 8-2 at home, they’re 1-7 on the road.

20. Charlotte Hornets (9-10)

The Charlotte Hornets 2-2 last week, with Kemba Walker scoring 43 points to sink the Boston Celtics in a 117-112 game. Hard to look past their latest defeat, however, which was a 124-123 loss on the road to the lowly Atlanta Hawks.

21. Utah Jazz (9-11)

The Jazz mirror last season’s team and how they started. Utah is in desperate need of a second consistent scorer, and right now they just don’t have that after it appeared over the first few games of the season that Rudy Gobert was ready for a much more heightened role in Utah’s offense.

22. Minnesota Timberwolves (9-11)

After a slow start to the season, Karl-Anthony Towns has picked things up for Minnesota. He had 35 points, 22 rebounds and six assists in Minnesota’s victory over Chicago on Saturday.

23. Brooklyn Nets (8-13)

The Brooklyn Nets are just 2-5 since losing Caris LeVert to a foot injury two weeks ago. A problem for the team has been their defense, which has suffered in his absence.

24. Miami Heat (7-12)

Dwyane Wade gave fans at Scotiabank Arena quite a show on Sunday night when he dropped 35 points off the bench vs the Toronto Raptors. In a season that has gotten off to a tough start, it’s a treat for Heat fans to watch Wade show his vintage self.

25. New York Knicks (7-14)

New York went 3-1 last week, winning three consecutive games for the first time since last December. If they win their next game, it’ll be their first four-game winning streak since last December as well.

26. Washington Wizards (7-12)

The Washington Wizards can’t buy a basket from deep and they may be even worse at defending the long ball, allowing teams to shoot 48.3 percent from beyond the arc.

27. Phoenix Suns (4-16)

The Phoenix Suns called on the ageless Jamal Crawford to help lead them to their first road win of the season last week, and he delivered. The Suns are 1-9 on the road this season.

28. Chicago Bulls (5-15)

The Chicago Bulls are getting scoring from Zach LaVine, but he’s been a defensive liability for the team. It makes you wonder if that was always the reason they weren’t as urgent to sign him to a contract this past offseason.

29. Cleveland Cavaliers (4-14)

The Cavaliers have been the NBA’s worst team for much of the season, but it’s hard to consider them the worst after two straight wins over the Philadelphia 76ers and Houston Rockets.

30. Atlanta Hawks (4-16)

The Atlanta Hawks are allowing an NBA-worst 118.6 PPG. It’s been a key reason for Atlanta’s 4-16 start.

[SPORTS] NFL WEEK 12 RECAP: RIVERS HAS HISTORIC DAY

[SPORTS] NFL WEEK 12 RECAP: RIVERS HAS HISTORIC DAY

Philip Rivers Dialed In, Seahawks Continue Climb, Cousins Solves Primetime Woes, And More!

So much for being ‘trash’.

Just in case you missed it, Jalen Ramsey talked a ton in his GQ interview this past summer. In a earth shattering and mostly ill-received interview, Ramsey gave scathing reviews for a number of the NFL’s starting quarterbacks, including his opponent on Sunday, Josh Allen.

Ramsey called the Buffalo Bills rookie quarterback ‘trash’ and that he couldn’t wait to play him this season.

Well, let’s just say that didn’t work out too well for him.

Surprisingly, that was a pretty good football game down in Western New York. I wasn’t able to catch all of the game until I got home from the New England Patriots annual trip to East Ruthford.

My girlfriend beside me laughed at the fact Buffalo was beating Jacksonville, but all it made me do was cringe in knowing that the Patriots had made them look like a Super Bowl Contender back in Week 2.

If anything, that’s a reminder that what we see in the first month of the season is unlikely to be the case at this point in the season.

The Cincinnati Bengals and Miami Dolphins were 3-1, Ryan Fitzpatrick was an MVP candidate and we all thought the Buffalo Bills would finish 0-16 after their first two games.

Yeah, things changed a lot.

Here are my biggest takeaways from Week 12 of the NFL season.

Rivers Sets NFL Mark In Chargers Rout Of Cardinals

The question going into the Los Angeles Chargers home game vs the Arizona Cardinals wasn’t if Philip Rivers was pissed off following last week’s loss, but just what he would do in response.

In a memorable performance, Rivers continued his strong 2018 with one for the history books.

Philip Rivers set an NFL record for completions to begin a game with 25 straight completions on Sunday in the Los Angeles Chargers’ 45-10 blowout of the Arizona Cardinals.

Rivers, who was coming off a two interception performance vs the Denver Broncos in a tough 23-22 loss at home, was electric in this one.

There were difficult throws made down the field to well covered targets, an amazing one-handed grab, toe-tap touchdowns in the corner of the end zone and Rivers simply taking what the defense gave him.

His first incompletion of the game did not surface until the 6:04 mark of the third quarter when a pass intended for Austin Ekeler fell incomplete.

Rivers would ultimately throw another touchdown to cap off the drive before exiting. He finished the game going 28-for-29 with 259 passing yards and three touchdowns.

The Los Angeles Chargers (8-3) lost Melvin Gordon to an MCL injury, the one down from the game.

The Chargers have a huge matchup next Sunday night in Pittsburgh when they face the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Defense Helps Broncos End Steelers Streak

The Denver Broncos have been close in a number of their losses this season. Something that could’ve derailed their morale as a team has only further provided the team with confidence they can turn those losses to victories.

They did that on Sunday, and in the process helped their cause in a possible push for the playoffs.

The Denver Broncos defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers 24-17 on Sunday afternoon at Sports Authority Field to end the Pittsburgh Steelers’ six-game winning streak.

Shelby Harris intercepted Ben Roethlisberger on a pass in the end zone from the two-yard line late to seal Denver’s second huge win in as many weeks.

The Denver Broncos defense forced the Pittsburgh Steelers into four turnovers, including two game-changing turnovers in the second half that saw Denver’s offense capitalize and score touchdowns off each.

Leading Denver’s offense was rookie running back Phillip Lindsay, who rushed for 110 yards on just 14 carries with a touchdown run that gave Denver a 24-17 lead in the fourth quarter.

Case Keenum would throw for 197 passing yards and two touchdowns, going another game without throwing an interception.

With their wins over the Los Angeles Chargers and Pittsburgh Steelers in consecutive weeks, Denver has vaulted themselves into the playoff race.

Their remaining schedule is a relatively easy one, as they have three road games with the Cincinnati Bengals, San Francisco 49ers and Oakland Raiders while having to face the Cleveland Browns and Los Angeles Chargers at home.

For Pittsburgh, it’s a tough trip back to the Steel City.

The Pittsburgh Steelers amassed 527 total yards, a season-high total allowed by the Denver Broncos, but Roethlisberger’s two interceptions and lost fumbles from James Connor and Xavier Grimble came back to haunt Pittsburgh.

The Steelers hadn’t allowed a 100-yard rusher all season, but they did that on Sunday in Denver as their run defense has looked suspect over the past two weeks.

They have allowed 303 rushing yards in just the past two weeks, both on the road where the team has struggled to replicate its on-field success.

They’ll look to get back to their winning ways at home when they host the Los Angeles Chargers next Sunday night at Heinz Field.

Wilson Helps Keep Seahawks Afloat In NFC Playoff Race

It wasn’t long ago that it appeared the future of the NFC was to be a number of encounters between the Seattle Seahawks and Carolina Panthers in the postseason, but two teams who have seen changes from personnel to coaching over the years are fighting to remain in the playoff picture.

In a thrilling contest, the Seattle Seahawks outlasted the Carolina Panthers 30-27 on Sunday at Bank of America Stadium to keep their playoff hopes alive and well.

Russell Wilson threw for 339 passing yards and two touchdowns, including a huge 43-yard completion to Tyler Lockett late to set up a game-winning 31-yard field goal by Sebastian Janikowski as Seattle won their second consecutive game.

A game that saw its shifts in momentum, it was Seattle — who crept closer to the sixth and final playoff spot — that pulled out a few more plays.

Carolina did well to limit Seattle’s rushing attack, but Russell Wilson was up to the challenge against Luke Kuechley and the Panthers.

In a critical play that went a long way towards determining the game, Russell Wilson found his wide receiver David Moore for a 35-yard touchdown on 4th and 3 to tie the game at 27-27 with 3:26 remaining.

On the ensuing possession, the Carolina Panthers would get into field goal range for struggling locker Graham Gano, who went on to miss a 52-yard attempt with 1:45 remaining.

The Seattle Seahawks (6-5) survived a career day from Panthers’ running back Christian McCaffrey, who finished with 237 total yards from scrimmage and two touchdowns.

After slipping past Carolina on Sunday, their schedule shapes up to be favorable as they finish the season with four out of their last five games of the season at home.

Three of those games will be against the San Francisco 49ers and Arizona Cardinals, two of the NFL’s worst teams.

Cousins Outshines Rodgers In Vikings Win

Kirk Cousins has heard the noise from outside, but he won’t acknowledge those who question the Minnesota Vikings for investing as much money as they did into him.

With Minnesota desperately in need of a reversal after losses in two out of their past three games, that’s exactly what Cousins delivered.

The Minnesota Vikings took down the Green Bay Packers 24-17 on Sunday night at U.S. Bank Stadium to stay in the playoff hunt.

Kirk Cousins carved up the Green Bay Packers secondary for 342 passing yards and three touchdowns in Minnesota’s victory over their NFC North rivals.

He outplayed his counterpart Aaron Rodgers, who was sacked four times in the loss. Rodgers finished the game throwing for only 198 passing yards and one touchdown.

After battling to a 29-29 tie back in Week 2, the two teams played to a 14-14 tie at the half. In the second half, it was Minnesota, leading 17-14, establishing a cushion late in the third quarter after Kirk Cousins’ 14-yard touchdown score to Adam Thielen gave the Vikings a 24-14 lead.

The Vikings defense would stand up to Rodgers, holding Green Bay to a field goal in the second half as they improved to 4-2 at home this season.

Currently in the No. 5 spot in the NFC playoff picture, Minnesota has their work cut out for them with two consecutive road games vs the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks over the next two weeks.

Winning one of those games could be a determining factor in Mike Zimmer’s Minnesota Vikings advancing to the playoffs as the Chicago Bears are in control of the NFC North with just five games remaining.

[SPORTS] KANTER, KNICKS TOP GRIZZLIES IN MEMPHIS

[SPORTS] KANTER, KNICKS TOP GRIZZLIES IN MEMPHIS

Fizdale Gets Win In Revenge Game

David Fizdale downplayed his return to Memphis on Sunday night against a team he coached just last season, but everyone knew heading in this game was personal.

Everyone including the New York Knicks.

The New York Knicks outlasted the Memphis Grizzlies 103-98 on Sunday night at the FedExForum to win their third consecutive game.

Enes Kanter led the New York Knicks with yet another 20-20 game as he finished with 21 points and a career-high 26 rebounds in a monstrous performance.

Tim Hardaway Jr. would score a team-high 22 points in his 38 minutes of action.

Grit and grind are two things that the Memphis Grizzlies pride themselves in. It comes as no surprise that’s also a blueprint for success for David Fizdale as a head coach, who’s team outmuscled the defensive-minded Grizzlies on their home floor.

The New York Knicks used a third quarter surge that saw them outscore Memphis 35-19 to gain the edge in a game they trailed by nine points at the half.

Memphis would claw their way back to the lead late in the fourth quarter thanks to Marc Gasol (27 points, eight rebounds), and Mike Conley (23 points, 11 assists), but New York would be the team to finish strong.

Emmanuel Mudiay would score on a highlight reel slam dunk over Grizzlies’ guard Garrett Temple for an and-1 opportunity which he would convert to give New York a 97-93 lead with 1:35 remaining.

The Knicks would come up huge on defense thereafter, with Trey Burke and Noah Vonleh recording critical shot blocks on consecutive possessions to turn back the host Grizzlies. Free throws by Emmanuel Mudiay, Trey Burke and Frank Ntilikina would seal the victory for New York.

The New York Knicks (7-14) have put together their best string of games this season over the past week.

It first began by pushing the Portland Trail Blazers to the limit at Madison Square Garden in a close defeat before stunning the Boston Celtics the next night in Boston, winning at home vs the New Orleans Pelicans, and now a victory on the road vs a formidable Memphis Grizzlies team.

New York made up for a 37 percent shooting night by out-rebounding Memphis 56-41 and at the free throw line as they shot 27-for-32 compared to 11-for-19 for Memphis.

Energy and effort, a key to the New York Knicks success, it’s redemption for coach David Fizdale, who a season after leading Memphis to the playoffs was fired 15 games into the 2017-18 season.

The New York Knicks will look to continue their winning ways when they visit Little Caesars Arena to face the Detroit Pistons.

[SPORTS] BUTLER’S GAME-WINNER HELPS 76ERS STUN NETS AT BARCLAYS

Nets Blow Lead, Game In Stinging Defeat

With the addition of Jimmy Butler to the roster, the Philadelphia 76ers figured out the puzzle they couldn’t in their last visit to Brooklyn.

In a come-from-behind effort, the Philadelphia 76ers defeated the Brooklyn Nets 127-125 on Sunday night at the Barclays Center to hand Brooklyn their third straight loss.

In a true heart breaker, Jimmy Butler sunk the Brooklyn Nets late with a game-winning step-back 3-pointer over Rondae Hollis-Jefferson with 0.4 seconds remaining in the game.

Butler finished the game with 34 points and 12 rebounds. Joel Embiid would add 32 points, 12 rebounds and four assists.

The Brooklyn Nets couldn’t keep the Philadelphia from using a wild rally in the fourth quarter to steal a game that appeared for a long while to be there’s.

Brooklyn led by as many as 20 points in this one and 19 in the second half as they could do no wrong on offense or defense.

The Brooklyn Nets offense dominated the Philadelphia 76ers through three quarters, shooting well over 57 percent from the field, but the team bottomed out late.

Turnovers hurt as they lost that battle 16-9. They also were out-shot at the free throw line, as Philadelphia went 27-for-33 while Brooklyn finished 15-for-20.

D’Angelo Russell scored a season-high 38 points while adding eight rebounds and eight assists, but his amazing performance was all for naught.

Spencer Dinwiddie had a big night, tying his career-high with 31 points, hitting 11 of his 15 shot attempts while adding five assists off the bench.

Brooklyn was outscored 38-23 in the fourth quarter and Russell struggled to find his groove late for Brooklyn, despite an impressive overall showing.

Brooklyn was looking to bounce back from two consecutive defeats by getting back to their identity and staying within it.

They did for three quarters, but after a second half implosion at home, they are now 0-2 during their four-game homestand.

The Brooklyn Nets will return to the court on Wednesday night when they host the visiting Utah Jazz at the Barclays Center.

[SPORTS] BIVOL CRUISES PAST PASCAL FOR UNANIMOUS DECISION VICTORY

[SPORTS] BIVOL CRUISES PAST PASCAL FOR UNANIMOUS DECISION VICTORY

Bivol Wins Easily In Atlantic City

As Dmitry Bivol continues his quest for light heavyweight supremacy, veteran and experienced foes like the one he faced on Saturday will be in his way of doing so.

In a fight that may bring detractors and make opposing light heavyweights feel less fear in facing him down the road, Bivol dominated, but not in typical Bivol fashion.

Dmitry Bivol (15-0, 11 KOs) defeated Jean Pascal (33-6-1, 20 KOs) by unanimous decision on Saturday night at the Mark G. Etess Arena in the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino to retain his WBA title.

Two judges scored the fight 119-109 while one judge scored it 117-111, all in favor of Dmitry Bivol.

In a performance that was more of a display of Bivol’s tactical brilliance, the Russian kept Pascal on the back foot early and often with the jab and the threat of his blinding hand-speed in the light heavyweight division.

At times he would open up with a sharp combination of punches, working well with the left hook against Pascal, who tried to counter throughout the fight.

It was a rough night for Jean Pascal, who couldn’t find the range and would grow increasingly frustrated with Bivol’s tactics, standing flat footed at times with his hands down as a ploy to get the champion to come in so he could counter.

Wild overhand rights and bull rushes by Pascal were easily snuffed out by Bivol, who continues to show defensive prowess and mannerisms beyond his years.

The most action-packed round of the fight would be the eighth round, which saw a desperate Pascal, down big on the scorecards, for broke after landing a right hand shot on Bivol.

He chased Bivol around the ring with wild shots, but soon found himself getting chased with thudding combinations by Bivol against his guard. Pascal would end the round with a flurry.

Pascal would come on late, but never seemed to do enough besides show a good chin to take the punches from a fighter who suddenly doesn’t look as frightening as advertised.

It wouldn’t take much for Bivol to breeze to a decision victory, as he was easily the more active fighter throughout the night and utilized his jab as such.

Bivol landed 217 out of 678 total punches (32%), landing 127 out of 287 power punches (44%). Pascal would land only 60 out of 357 total punches (17%), and throughout the fight landed a grand total of six jabs.

A hard fight to watch at times due to the dullness in action or lack thereof, Bivol’s second title defense is also his second straight victory by decision after only going the distance twice in his first 13 career fights.

Questions of his punch power may surface now after allowing a 36-year-old who’s suffered significant damage in the past to Sergey Kovalev and others to make it through 12 rounds with him.

From a fan’s perspective, Bivol fought a true boxer’s fight, perhaps showing the world he’s much more than a intimidating knockout machine that can blister his opponents with punch speed seen at 147 pounds, not the 175-pound weight class he’s currently in.

A fight down the road with IBA and WBO title holder Eleider Alvarez may happen in 2019 as neither fighter has ever backed down from a challenge, and if so, who wouldn’t want to see that bout?

[SPORTS] AGGIES TAKE HISTORIC 7OT THRILLER VS LSU

[SPORTS] AGGIES TAKE HISTORIC 7OT THRILLER VS LSU

Move Over Chiefs-Rams

The game kept going and going. And after a while the fans at College Station began to yawn, but never were they restless.

In the Game of the Year in college football, the Texas A&M Aggies outlasted the LSU Tigers in a 74-72 seven overtime thriller on Saturday night at Kyle Field.

Kellen Mond threw a touchdown pass to Quartney Davis to tie the game before hitting Kendrick Rogers for a two-point conversion to give Texas A&M a wild victory over their SEC rivals.

The two-point conversion took place after a pass interference penalty on the LSU Tigers on the first attempt and a false start by Texas A&M on the offensive line.

This game went back and forth, with Kellen Mond and Joe Burrow combining for a whopping 12 total touchdowns. Joe Burrow would throw for three and run for three while Kellen Mond threw a career-high six touchdown passes.

The craziness that at first began with Kellen Mond’s last gasp touchdown throw to Quartney Davis with no time left in regulation to tie the game at 31-31 would just be the beginning of a fantastic football game that will be remembered as one for the ages.

Both defenses were tired and gassed and each offense took advantage of that as 10 touchdowns were scored in overtime.

No. 7 ranked LSU, who fell to 9-3 on the season, were one of the top defensive teams in the nation coming in while the No. 22 ranked Texas A&M Aggies were a potent offensive team, but never 74 points potent (I mean…how many teams are?!?)

This game, which saw a combined 1,017 total yards by both teams, is the highest scoring in FBS history. The game also tied the FBS record for most overtimes in a game.
