Legendary filmmaker John Singleton is going to be taken off life support, according to a statement from his family. The director suffered a severe stroke last week and has been on life support since.
“It is with heavy hearts we announce that our beloved son, father and friend, John Daniel Singleton will be taken off life support today. This was an agonizing decision, one that our family made, over a number of days, with the careful counsel of John’s doctors,” reads the family statement.
Singleton, just 51 years old, is one of the most accomplished directors of all-time, most notably from his feature debut Boyz n the Hood. The film earned him a pair of Oscar nominations, making him both the youngest and first African-American to earn a best director nom.
The director/producer’s most recent project was FX’s Snowfall, a series that explored Los Angeles in the early 1980’s and the crack cocaine epidemic during that time. Singleton served as the show’s creator and executive producer for the first two seasons, with the third season set to be out sometime later this year.
Truly a heartbreaking development for such a talented man. Prayers go out to John Singleton and his friends and family.

Travis Scott, SZA, and The Weeknd are collaborating on a new song for the upcoming Game of Thrones-inspired album, For the Throne. The song will be called Power is Power, which will likely be about different Game of Thrones characters’ drive for power. In the 30 second snippet that was released (but since taken down), we were able to hear what appears to be the chorus sung by the Weeknd:
I rise from my scars/ Nothing hurts me now/ ‘Cause power is power/ Now watch me burn it down
Two characters that come to mind that this is referring to is Daenerys and Cersei. Both of them had to rise from the scars and used fire to come to power. They are also the most powerful characters in the show right now, so it would make sense to refer to both of them, symbolically.
Other guests on the upcoming album include Joey Badass, Ty Dolla $ign, Lil Peep, and more. The full album will be released April 26th.
Let us know who you think that chorus is referring to in the comments.
Kevin Abstract released three more songs late last night in a collection that he calls Ghettobaby. Abstract announced last week that he was going to be releasing a series of three songs every Thursday for the rest of the month. He went on Twitter to explain that all the songs are apart of the same album and not just three separate EPs.
The new batch of songs, produced by Romil Hemnani and Jack Antonoff, signify a new era for the L.A. based rapper. Based off the three track sample alone, it is clear that Abstract has improved immensely from his first solo project. Collaborating with a super producer Jack Antonoff is a huge artistic leap for Abstract and indicates the broad range his music is capable of reaching. Abstract also clarified that this new solo venture will not get in the way of more Brockhampton music.
All three tracks, “Corpus Christi,” “Baby Boy,” and “Mississippi,” are extremely personal exposés from Abstract. “Corpus Christi” sounds more like an essay than a rap song and it’s bliss to the ears. The production is what wraps this all together, it’s typically a highlight of Abstract’s music in his Brockhampton ventures, but this stuff is in its own stratosphere. Two thumbs up for this fresh batch of music.
Abstract is slated to release more music next Thursday, so stay on watch for that new drop.
