Rich Chigga really came up in the game in 2017. He made his name by going viral on social media platforms like Youtube and Vine clips with his comedy. By establishing a name for himself he was able to put out rap songs with an audience. He recorded his first rap track in 2014 using his iPhone and has grown since then. On February 2016 he dropped his first official single, “Dat $tick” and it went viral.
Check out his break out track:
He combined rap with comedy to make a hybrid modern day rapper. Throughout the year he also released a series of other tracks including “Who That Be” and “Seventeen.” Then in August 2017, he released his other massive hit, “Glow like That.”

But now under all his music videos, it says the song is by “Rich Brian” instead of his stage name “Rich Chigga.” The term Chigga is an ethnic slur portmanteau of “Chinese” and “n—a” used to degrade “Black-acting” or “ghetto” Asian people. Some people thought this was offensive, but I thought it was all in good fun. He clearly didn’t have the intentions to piss people off- how would he get fans?
The first time I saw the name change I was really confused because I had no idea why he would do that. Also, it’s pretty uncommon to change your name after you get big, but the problem is he isn’t even that big yet. Yes, he has made countless great songs but it isn’t like he is Jay-Z. Changing his name might cause audiences to forget about him. We already associate his music with “Rich Chigga” which was not only a great name but also funny. The name really has a star quality power to it. Rich Chigga has always been a funny guy, so why does he want to switch it up on us now?

He basically just used the name to have a viral quality to it so his music would be clicked on more due to the offensive nature that is the word “Chigga.” I understand that some people might be offended by the name but it is the artist’s decision on how to brand themselves, and he certainly did that and more. It’s also weird to trash your offensive name after the hype dies down because it just shows that you were trying to create drama. I really don’t think it was smart to change the name but he said that he has wanted to do it for a while now. I don’t know guys, “Rich Brian” just seems so boring.
2015 was the year of Fetty Wap. The release of his single “Trap Queen” made him an instant superstar. Nearly a year after it was released, it hit the #2 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It stayed on the charts for 52 weeks and made its mark.
Check out the video here (but I highly doubt you could forget it):
After this release, Fetty Wap was one of the biggest rappers in the game. To capitalize on his success he put out a series of popular singles including “679” featuring Remy Boyz and “My Way” featuring Monty. He also a hilarious feature for Lil Dicky’s “$ave Dat Money” in 2016.

But after that, it seems like he fell off of the face of the earth. What happened to him after those three singles were released? Well, it could be because he only had one album in 2015 and didn’t follow it up until three years later. Also the songs, “Trap Queen,” “679” and “My Way” seem like the same song but only slightly different. One can’t deny that they carry the same themes, similar beats and vocals.
Every song he put out was a deluded version of “Trap Queen”, which probably made fans not want to listen to the whole album. I know I didn’t want to support him after he displayed that he was only a one trick pony. He should have expanded himself musically so others would be more inclined to follow his career and support him. He should have capitalized on the hype that “Trap Queen” brought it. He recently released an album, For My Fans in 2018 and I didn’t even hear of the release.
I was rooting for Fetty Wap and I hated seeing him fall off. Now that there are so many new rappers in the game it might be hard to have a comeback. I believe in him though, he probably has just been lazy in the studio. Get back on your grind Fetty, the fans miss you.

Sources say that he is singing about his ex-girlfriend Brittany Byrd. If I was her I would take him back after this song. Who wouldn’t want to date Lil Uzi Vert? I’m honestly in love with him.
He sings,
“I know it hurts sometimes but you’ll get over it
You’ll find another life to live
I swear that you’ll get over it
I know you’re sad and tired
You’ve got nothing left to give
You’ll find another life to live
I know that you’ll get over it”
This song is different from the typical breakup song. Instead of being sad and angry about the situation he takes comfort in the closure. One can really tell the pain he has gone through, but it is combined with a melancholy acceptance. The positivity of looking towards the future is what is missing from music these days. One can complain and complain non stop about their ex-girlfriend, but the acknowledgment that it is not a possibility anymore is what gives this song an edge. Lil Uzi Vert has the talent to create dance music with sad lyrics, and this is why I keep coming back to his music. In his hit single, “XO TOUR Llif3” he sings, “Baby, I am not afraid to die, Push me to the edge, All my friends are dead, Push me to the edge, All my friends are dead, Push me to the edge, All my friends are dead, Push me to the edge” and it seems like this song follows the same theme.
Lil Uzi Vert also released a remix featuring Nicki Minaj on December 4th, complete with a music video.

I personally don’t think that the Nicki verse really added to the song. It doesn’t make sense to have Nicki talking about her “real good coochie” in the middle of the song. The song really revolves around letting go of someone and the verse just seems thrown in. Although I thought that it shouldn’t have been added I did like her call back verse to one of her first songs, “Itty Bitty Piggy.” I also liked the line “If you fucked it up with Nicki, You feel pretty fucking shitty.” That being said, I have no idea why she would rap about pita bread on the last line. Anyways, Nicki gives us eye candy in the video but why does she never show up to the video shoots?
The visuals in this video are simple but they say a lot. Lil Uzi Vert is tied to a tree with rope sitting next to his grave, unable to die but also unable to get up and leave. He seems like he is stuck in time. Also, the rope looks like it could be easily undone, which shows his lack of energy. He is unaffected by the pitbull that is trying to attack him. He is awaiting his funeral but no one shows up.
The artistry that Uzi puts in this song shows that he is an artist here to stay. If he keeps releasing striking material like this he definitely won’t be subbed at next year’s Grammys.
