ARE CDs GOING EXTINCT?

It seems like the music industry that we knew is slowly fading away. According to Billboard, Best Buy will no longer carry physical CDs and Target just announced they will get rid of them in the near future. Beginning July 1st, 2018 Best Buy notified music suppliers that they will no longer have CDs in their store.

It seems like carrying CDs is starting to become more costly now that everyone is buying their music online. The disruptive change of the internet really shaped the industry in a big way. Now every artist is putting their music on online streaming sites like Apple Music and Spotify. There have been many businesses that have closed down because of this change. It was really sad to see big companies that sell records to go out of business.

This change marks the end of an era. Now we might not be seeing CDs anywhere unless it was a from a small business, or F.Y.E, the CD store that also sells DVDs and t-shirts to keep their revenue up. To keep the records in the store they would have to make more money than the cost of having them there, and no one wants to buy them. It is becoming risky to have physical copies of records in the store, and everyone is backing down. But what about the meaning behind this music? When records are created they are meant to be listened to with their artwork being a vital part of the music. No one wants to own music anymore. Remember how special buying your first CD was? Now kids go on iTunes. It just isn’t the same experience. To see big businesses not carrying CDs anymore is the tipping point of what is to come. I will be extremely saddened if they go out of style because it holds so much weight in our hearts and to this industry.

WHAT YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT RIHANNA’S ANTI

ANTI is the eighth studio album by Rihanna. Following a premature leak on Tidal, Rihanna released the album as a free download on January 28, 2016. This album was a step away from her pop and cub roots. She told MTV, that she wanted to make timeless music, and she accomplished her goal. ANTI was one of the best releases by far and showed her creativity as an artist. The stand out tracks are “Work,” “Needed Me,” “Higher” and “Goodnight Gotham.” Basically, every single track was a stand out track.

But here’s what you didn’t know:

Her track “Same Ol’ Mistakes” is actually a cover of Tame Impala’s song, “New Person, Same Old Mistakes.” On the album, it does not specify that it is a cover but it certainly is. I was actually listening to this track for weeks without noticing that it was a cover.

Tame Impala is a psychedelic rock band composed of Kevin Parker, Jay Watson, Cam Avery, Dominic Simper, Nick Allbrook. They started releasing music in 2008 and have grown themselves to be a pretty popular name in the Indie world.

Here’s the original version:

And here’s Rihanna’s version we all know and love:

When artists put covers out, there is always going to be negative criticism, but I haven’t really seen any. Rihanna takes the original song and puts a soulful sexy twist to it. The song works perfectly with Rihanna’s vocals and vibe. Overall I think both songs are great, and the cover is respectable. Thanks Rihanna, but next time give credit where credit is due.
